Heikki Kovalainen says he experienced a "straight-forward" opening day in Austin, where he officially marked his debut as Kimi Räikkönen's replacement at Lotus. The Finn, who has been acting as Caterham's reserve driver this season, impressed during the afternoon session by posting the fifth fastest time on the Medium tyres, just under two tenths of a second quicker than new team-mate Romain Grosjean.
