Alonso tops opening practice session of 2014 in Australia for Ferrari

Fernando Alonso ended the opening session of the 2014 season at the top of the timesheets for Ferrari, while Mercedes morning was spoilt by a failure for Lewis Hamilton. Alonso set the pace on the first morning of official running, following months of pre-season preparation, ending the session fastest of all with a lap of 1:38.840 in the Ferrari F14 T, and in the process becoming the only man to break the 1 minute 42  seconds barrier. Jenson Button was second fastest, some seven sevenths adrift of the Spaniard, at the wheel of the McLaren, on what was a positive morning for the 2009 champion, despite some issues with the display on his steering wheel.
