Fernando Alonso ended the opening session of the 2014 season at the top of the timesheets for Ferrari, while Mercedes morning was spoilt by a failure for Lewis Hamilton. Alonso set the pace on the first morning of official running, following months of pre-season preparation, ending the session fastest of all with a lap of 1:38.840 in the Ferrari F14 T, and in the process becoming the only man to break the 1 minute 42  seconds barrier.
