Kovalainen to become Mercedes tester - report

– Former McLaren and Lotus driver Heikki Kovalainen is on the verge of inking a deal to become an official test driver for Mercedes. Kovalainen has been negotiating with the team for a while now and talks are so 'advanced' that the only thing left to do is to sign the contracts, the Ilta-Sanomat newspaper in his native Finland reports. If it does happen, then the 32-year-old will link up again Lewis Hamilton, who he was teamed with at McLaren in 2008 and 2009. Kovalainen made his Formula 1 debut with the Renault in 2007 and claimed his sole F1 victory in 2008 in Hungary after switching to McLaren. He was dropped by the Woking-based team at the end of 2009.
