Pirelli will trial a new 18-inch tyre at next week's in-season test at Silverstone.
There has been talk of late of Formula 1 changing from the current 13-inch tyres to 18-inchers in time for the 2017 season.
Pirelli will be testing the rubber on Day Two at Silverstone with Lotus putting the tyres through their paces.
However, motorsport director Paul Hembery insists the test does not mean F1 will swap tyre sizes in the future.
"The 13-inch tyre is no longer relevant to the everyday road user because even an 18-inch tyre is used by standard vehicles these days," he said.
