Lotus owner Gérard Lopez says the Enstone-based outfit approached Fernando Alonso with a 'real option' for the 2015 Formula 1 season. The Spaniard announced his departure from Ferrari prior to the 2014 finale in Abu Dhabi, before being named as a McLaren driver for next season alongside Jenson Button last week. Alonso had been in contact with McLaren about returning to the team for some time, but Lopez has revealed that Lotus gave him an offer for 2015, before ultimately retaining Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado.
