In the two weeks leading up to the Malaysian Grand Prix the status of Valtteri Bottas was unclear following the back injury which ruled the Finn out of the opener in Melbourne. Though Williams has Susie Wolff and GP3 champion Alex Lynn signed up to test and development roles respectively, the team was keeping its driver options open in case it had to replace Bottas this weekend and Sutil's signing is likely with that situation in mind.
