McLaren and Honda encouraged by pace despite double retirement

Today's race in Sepang offered a silver lining behind a proverbial dark cloud for the McLaren-Honda partnership, as both Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button were looking more competitive in terms of overall race pace.  With heavy fuel loads, both drivers were fighting on the fringes of the top during during the race, but would not complete the full distance due to issues with their power units. Alonso was instructed by his team to retire his MP4-30 on lap 21, as the car suffered with an ERS cooling issue when he was running as high as eighth.
