Mercedes tops rain disrupted first day of Austria test

Mercedes unsurprisingly nailed itself on the top of the timesheets in a rain-interrupted opening day of the two-day in-season test in Austria on Tuesday with reserve driver Pascal Wehrlein behind the wheel. The 20-year-old German's time around the Red Bull Ring, however, was 2.5 seconds slower than the pole position benchmark set during qualifying for the recently concluded Austrian Grand Prix while the top five were covered by just half a second. It wasn't necessarily a representative pecking order, particularly since the programmes were tweaked following the loss of track time in the morning as rain lashed the circuit in Spielberg.
