Nostalgia: Mansell scores maiden win at Brands, Prost claims first world title

October 6 marks 30 years since Nigel Mansell scored the first of his 31 Formula 1 wins, with victory at the 1985 European Grand Prix at Brands Hatch. Lotus racer Ayrton Senna started the race from pole and was  joined on the front row by fellow Brazilian Nelson Piquet in the BMW powered Brabham. The two Williams-Hondas of Mansell and Keke Rosberg lined up third and fourth, with Philippe Streiff a surprise fifth on the grid for Ligier. Prost, who stood on the verge of claiming his first title with three races to go – the Frenchman 16 points clear of his closest challenger, Ferrari’s Michele Alboreto – would start just sixth.
