Lewis Hamilton drew first blood in Abu Dhabi by setting the pace in the opening practice session at the Yas Marina Circuit on Friday. Hamilton posted a fastest lap of 1:43.754 to edge out Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg by one-tenth of a second in FP1 as the majority of the teams focused on evaluating new parts and updates ahead of the 2016 season. Starting at 1pm local time – four hours earlier than qualifying or the race will – FP1 offered the teams little in the way of representative running, putting greater weighting on second practice later on Friday.
