Perez picks up five-place grid penalty for gearbox change

Sergio Perez has picked up a five-place grid penalty for this Sunday’s European Grand Prix after a gearbox change. Force India opted to change the gearbox on the Mexican driver’s car due to damage sustained during in third practice. Perez lost the rear of his VJM09 and hit the Turn 15 wall at the end of the 60-minute session, just after the chequered flag. Prior to the crash, Force India was enjoying an encouraging FP3 session, with Nico Hulkenberg and Perez in third and sixth place. The change of gearbox breaks the six-race run required in the Formula 1 regulations and he has been given a five-place penalty.
