Ted Kravitz claims FIA wants Michael Masi to return as race director
Michael Masi has been spotted at the Australian Grand Prix, his home country’s race, returning to Formula 1 for the first time since his controversial decision cost Lewis Hamilton a record-breaking eighth world title. After Masi’s decision to not follow the correct safety car procedure at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Max Verstappen won his first world title in a last-lap shootout. With Hamilton accusing officials of having “manipulated” the outcome, Masi left his role as Formula 1 race director.
