I woke up this morning and the house was cold. This is September in sunny Southern California (yes, you need to capitalize that) and I'm not used to it being cold. Hang with me here because that will be important later. Anyway, I went on with my morning rituals without the slightest hint that anything was amiss in The World (well, I couldn't find a...

I have to say thanks to Russ for his great blog entry discussing the nature of the pinnacle of motorsports. Thought-provoking to be sure. I have long opposed the banning of 'innovation' in F1 but when teams spend millions of dollars on finding the correct shape of a winglet or greeblie, one has to stop and question one's support of...
I don't watch the television show 'American Idol', but I recently heard one of the contestants, Bucky Covington, sing about days gone by. I would have thought this kid just sang what someone else wrote, but before I heard the song, I heard him being interviewed by two fake-happy disc-jockeys. In that interview Bucky talked about his childhood...
I have discovered that Life is a series of distractions.
I know, this is something like discovering the moon isn't made of cheese (or is it? But that's another entry best done by Russ). The point is, I have just discovered it. Deep down in my bones discovered it. Grokked it, if you will. Why haven't I discovered this long before now? Well, I...

Back in my college days (circa 1988) the term 'consensus' wasn't used much in scientific circles. My major at that time was anthropology and I was looking at becoming an archaeologist. I had to take some hard science classes and I don't ever remember 'consensus' being widely used as a credible answer to any scientific question. We...
I need a bit of a break from the forum. Too much heavy political/religious talk has me wanting a vacation!
It's not often that cheese will broaden one's mind. Well, I'm actually not too sure of that; perhaps cheese frequently broadens minds but I'm just not paying attention. Anyway this blog entry is about how cheese has inadvertently (or covertly, I'm not exactly sure which) broadened my mind.

Tobacco.
When did this become such a hated item? I strongly feel, despite the so-called expert's reports, that more people suffer from the tiny particles of car exhaust on the freeways every day than suffer from 'second-hand smoke' (it's no coincidence that the highest rates of lung cancer in the US are centered around smog-filled cities...

I have emerged yet again from another holiday season with a few scrapes and bruises, but otherwise fine. The kids were especially stressful and I would not recommend children if you want to enjoy the holidays. Once those little ones are around it becomes all about them. Both of my beloved whelps had fun and enjoyed themselves and probably wont appreciate...
