A Different World

Posted by Autumnpuma , 28 April 2007 · 26 views

I don't watch the television show 'American Idol', but I recently heard one of the contestants, Bucky Covington, sing about days gone by. I would have thought this kid just sang what someone else wrote, but before I heard the song, I heard him being interviewed by two fake-happy disc-jockeys. In that interview Bucky talked about his childhood and the television set at home that had a knob broken off and a pair of pliers on the top that you used to change the channel with. This was surprising, because I also remember this exact same thing. I listened to his song a bit closer after that.

Here are the lyrics and they sum up everything I remember from my own childhood. I'm American and is the song's writer, so bear that in mind. Still, I'd wager some of the same themes can be applied to different cultures....

We were born to mothers who smoked and drank
Our cribs were covered in lead based paint
No child proof lids no seat belts in cars
Rode bikes with no helmets and still here we are, still here we are
We got daddy’s belt when we misbehaved
Had three TV channels you got up to change
No video games and no satellite
All we had were friends and they were outside, playin’ outside

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

School always started the same every day
The pledge of allegiance then someone would pray
Not every kid made the team when they tried
We got disappointed and that was all right, we turned out all right

No bottled water, we drank from a garden hose
And every Sunday, all the stores were closed

It was a different world

As I write this, my 3 and 7-year-olds are outside playing in the sprinklers and throwing mud and probably stepping on wasps or sharp rocks or falling down scraping pink knees. Inside I drink my beer and type this entry and look at my daughter's computer sitting dark and empty. This is as it should be. I try to preserve the old ways.

That sums up my thoughts exactly, Mike. It applies very much to my childhood here in the UK as well. It was a different world, but we turned out alright.

For the UK audience we had, from Madness:

Naughty boys in nasty schools
Headmasters breaking all the rules
Having fun and playing fools
Smashing up the woodwork tools
All the teachers in the pub
Passing 'round the ready-rub
Trying not to think of when
The lunch-time bell will ring again.
Oh what fun we had
But, did it really turn out bad
All I learnt at school
Was how to bend not break the rules
Oh what fun we had
But at the time it seemed so bad
Trying different ways
To make a difference to...
The headmaster's had enough to-day
All the kids have gone away
Gone to fight with next-door's school
Every term, that is the rule
Sits alone and bends his cane
Same old backsides again
All the small ones tell tall tales
Walking home and squashing snails.
Oh what fun we had
But, did it really turn out bad
All I learnt at school
Was how to bend not break the rules
Oh what fun we had
But at the time it seemed so bad
Trying different ways
To make a difference to the days.
Lots of girls and lots of boys
Lots of smells and lots of noise
Playing football in the park
Kicking Pushbikes after dark
Baggy trousers, dirty shirt
Pulling hair and eating dirt
Teacher comes to break it up
Back of the 'ead with a plastic cup.
Oh what fun we had
But, did it really turn out bad
All I learnt at school
Was how to bend not break the rules
Oh what fun we had
But at the time it seemed so bad
Trying different ways
To make a difference to the days.
Baggy trousers, baggy trousers, baggy trousers

Sums up my schooldays. And not a video game in sight.

Excellent post, Russ, thanks! It's amazing how much of that I remember happening here in the States. Spanking in schools, eating dirt, playing around the neighborhood after dark without fear. I'm convinced the old ways were the right ways.
