Awful Offal

Posted by Autumnpuma , 18 February 2010 · 53 views

Ah, offal. No coincidence it's pronounced 'awful' is it? But let me back up a moment. I like to screw television. No, not the actual machinery (ouch!) but rather the networks that put on asinine programs and the pay-cable-companies that charge way too much for different asinine programs. Can we have a system where I can pick and choose my stations and pay only for those? Thanks. One of those stations I'd choose is an American network called 'The Food Network'. Quite original programming there for a cooking channel. I guess when you're dealing with a limited subject like a person standing there cooking, you really have to get creative to make it interesting. Anyway, I don't like to pay for 1,490 channels that I don't watch just to watch a few programs on The Food Network. So I do what most people do....I watch youtube.

Offal. Now we get to the sweetmeat of this blog post. In watching one of my favorite shows 'Iron Chef America' (not as entertaining as the dubbed Japanese version, but close) I stumbled across 'Battle: Offal'. I immediately thought of Russ. So, in the hopes that Russ is still reading these pitiful blog entries of mine, so here is the link to the program in question. I hope nobody find them awful. Ha! I crack myself up.

It's offaly versatile. See what I did there?
Great clips Mike. Made me all hungry, like. Do you eat sweetbreads Stateside? I recommend most heartily. Over here there's quite a movement encouraging "nose to tail" eating. Check out Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall (how could he be anything but a deranged Englishman?)

Mmmm. Furry.

For Andres

Maybe we should have a TF1 recipe thread to showcase our national cuisine?

Nice links, Russ (bookmarked 'em). I imagine offal is popular all over the states, albeit in the more rural areas. Growing up in a family of butchers and taxidermists, I have had my fair share of tasty trashbin trimmin's (caribou heart is delish, btw). Offal is especially common here in Southern California. We've always been a mix of European and Mexican influences and our 'cuisine' is no different. Just look at the ingredients in yummy Chorizo.

Yuck.
The only "thing" besides common steak cuts I eat is chorizo, and that costed me many years of Freudian therapy to accept. Everything else seems like displaced cannibalism to me.

BTW, there are plenty of different cuts here, is not as if you can go straight into a steakshop and say "I want a steak". You better be very specific on what you want and how you are going to cook it. Every cut has its taste and its best way of cooking it. As for offals, have I already mentioned "yuck"?
