Race two already and I've spent some time now tweaking the site. Numbers are low with just 100 people playing but then getting traffic and making people aware of a new Fantasy F1 site is really tough these days. I guess that using the 2008 season to test the site means that it's probably not a bad thing!

Anyway, I've already made lots of changes. The scoring system was found to be too complex and, with points awarded and deducted for virtually everything, it proved almost impossible to keep on top of it so I've removed the negative scoring and just left the positive scoring. It's now much easier for players to understand how they got their points. I've also introduced a budgeting system so that, after every race, team sponsors pay an amount of money to the development budget. This, in turn, means that players can develop their cars after each race using that budget just like the real world of F1.

Further introductions include the ability to define a prize for mini leagues. Whoever creates a nimi league can now add a prize that all participants of that mini league can see on their individual team manager pages. An example might be a crate of beer and then the winner of the mini league would receive that prize. Also new is the ability to transfer drivers or change chassis or engine manufacturers at three points in the season.

It all took a lot of code change but was based on what players asked for. As the season develops still further I hope to make yet more changes until I have the perfect Fantasy F1 site in time for the new season in 2009!

So It Begins

Welcome to this, my blog. I thought you might find it interesting to find out about another side of F1 that maybe most of you are not aware and that is what it's like to be the webmaster of a Fantasy F1 site.

The Fantasy F1 site is The F1 Game and it took me around two days to code it. I wrote it because I was fed up with the other Fantasy F1 sites around - they just didn't give me what I wanted, there weren't enough choices or involvement through the season. This site (The F1 Game) then is my answer to that and you can follow its' progress as I develop the site into something that I want to play myself and, hopefully, something that you'll find a little different.

At the moment it's a standard Fantasy F1 site but as I add features through the season, it should develop into something a little special. This isn't my first attempt at this, two seasons ago I launched a fully interactive site where, in common with the F1 season, you could develop your car as the season progressed. It sadly failed because, after following F1 for more than twenty five years, I lost interest in the whole F1 scene. With the arrival of Hamilton last year and a wholly renewed enthusiasm for the sport, I decided to revive the concept of an interactive site but, this time, let it develop at a natural pace that I can maintain.

The site itself is not a money maker for me - I run it as a free site but it is my way of letting other F1 fans (and, since you're here and reading this, I guess that means you!) add another dimension to the sport we all love and allows you to share more of the excitement that I feel as an F1 fan.

The first stage in moving on from what is now a basic site into something a little more exciting is to ask for people to join the site by creating their own teams and trying a season of Fantasy F1. It's a good test of how much you really know about the sport and, although there is an email address on the site, what I would really like is some feedback on how YOU feel the site works and, more importantly, some ideas on how YOU would like to site to develop.

I know that there are some sites out there that are very good but these are mainly paid for sites that charge a fee. What I would really like to do is create a community Fantasy F1 site that is run for the fans, by a fan using ideas from the fans themselves. Ideas, comments or suggestions - all are gratefully received!
