Okay so Ferrari are first to launch their 2009 contender. Wow these cars are going to take some getting used to.

Ferrari presents 2009 contender
12 January 2009 / Photos

The Ferrari Formula 1 team presented its new car for the 2009 season on Monday morning. Felipe Massa will complete the first laps with the F60 car later today, at the Mugello circuit in Italy.

The F60, breaking the trend of Ferrari's naming of its car models by the year, is the first contender to be launched ahead of the new season which kicks of in Australia in March. Until yesterday the F60 was to be launched at Ferrari's other test track, Fiorano, until unfavourable weather conditions saw plans altered.

The main differences in comparison to the 2008 car see a higher and wider front wing to meet the rule changes affecting aerodynamics for 2009, as well as a rear wing which is shorter but taller than its predecessor to allow greater airflow and more downforce during races, meaning competitors should be able to run closer together on track and therefore present them with more passing opportunities. The Ferrari is also the first car to be launched doning the Bridgestone slick tyres; this will be the first season the Japanese tyre manufacturer has produced its rubber minus grooves.

The 2009 launches will continue later this week, starting with Toyota who launch their new car on Thursday.

It's hard to make comment on the 09 spec cars because we really don't have anything to base any observations from. The front wing pylons look different how they sweep forwards.

I can't wait to Thursday now so not only we can see Toyota's take on the new regulations, but to compare and contrast with the F60. Finally F1 is interesting again. Yay :D

Strange, they say the front wing is 'higher and wider'... looks lower to me (and I thought the regs were just that too?).  And yes, we're going to see loads of first-corner-front-wing-flying methinks.

I like it, generally. I especially like the lack of aero-bits sticking out, now the body looks more like a mid-1990's F1 car.

It would look even better if the rear wing was also wide, but I know that would make overtaking harder.

Is it me or is the nose (from c#ckpit to tip) really long? Cant wait to see all the others now!

It looks lower to me too, anyway it good to see ferrari lunching the first that the rest, that is the trend for this new season, fisrt in lunching the car, first in testing the new car, first winning with the new car and fisrt in both campionships at the end of the season.

It's not so bad as the BMW. In fact I like everything but the rear wing. The height and width make it look like it was designed for something a different car but ran short of time and had to bolt something on. The flow just doesn't match.
" I never think I can hurt myself, not seriously. If you believe it can happen to you, how can you do this job? If your never over eight-tenths, or whatever, because your thinking about a shunt, your not going as quick as you can. And if your not doing that, your not a racing driver. Some guys in Formula 1... well, to me, they're not racing drivers. They drive racing cars, that's all. They're doing half a job. And in that case, I wonder why they do it at all..."

I actually like the front wing. Ok, it could do with a bit more finesse(I accept suggestions of a better word to put there XD) but I like it.
And the car looks very nice from the side XD

My sentiments, exactly.
I bet Honda's front wing (if they ever get there) will be based on Nick Fry's smile. It will scare the s##t out of whoever has one in their rearview mirrors.

Good stuff.
