GP2 driver and American Formula one hopeful, Scott Speed has been confirmed as the official driver for the American A1GP team, ‘A1 Team USA’ with team owner Rick Weidinger revealing the news and his belief that the young racer is the best US driver for the job, especially after he wowed the team with his performances in a recent test at the Paul Ricard circuit.

"Scott Speed represents the best for the United States and I think that he clearly meets our obligation to utilize the very best talent that America can offer in order to win the World Cup of Motorsport," Weidinger said in a statement. "I believe that A1 Team USA has the best chance for success in A1 Grand Prix because of Scott Speed and our race team."

Speed, who has also been confirmed the Red Bull Racing Formula One driver for the 2006 championship season, officially as a test driver at this stage, however it is highly speculated he will run in the newly purchased Minardi team alongside Christian Klien., is thrilled with the opportunity and cant wait ti get going at the opening round at Brands Hatch next weekend.

"It is a tremendous honour to be called onboard by Rick to lead A1 Team USA into Brands Hatch," Speed added. "I am very excited to carry the American flag into competition and will do my best to represent the U.S."

A1 is a great opportunity for the young drivers like Speek to get the real racing experience efore there are entering F1.

GP2 is arguably a better platform than A1 for gaining the necessary experience, but you're right, any kind of major open wheel racing will benefit young drivers like Speed who are preparing to enter F1. Particularly as it will take place over the off season, so he will be fresh off the heels of that series as he starts next year's F1 season.

Have there been any discussions how they intend to deal with the overlapping F1 and A1GP schedules at the beginning of next season? Scott could be a very busy boy as he starts his F1 season while still fighting out the final few races of the A1GP series.

"Schumacher has said he does not want to do anything bad or for anything bad to happen in this race, so I just hope that is what happens for his sake - but this shows how far Ferrari are prepared to go to help Michael win this Championship."

JV - Oct 25, 1997 - after Saturday Practice in the final round of the 1997 championship at Jerez, Spain. The next day would prove just how far Schumi was willing to go...................

if there are any date clashes, they could always find another driver. Allmendinger should be high on the list I feel.

"You just don't mess with Jacques Villeneuve" - Murray Walker, 1997 Hungarian GP.
"When Jacques was with us, he was a very aggressive driver, fiercely competitive, mentally hard as nails. Very quick with it, very gifted. A bright fellow, undoubtedly, very intelligent. He was an absolutely born racing driver - look at the way he'd bang wheels with Michael, pass people on the outside, that kind of thing" -Sir Frank Williams on Jacques Villeneuve
"This year, with BMW, JV's going very well, and I'm pleased for him. Whether or not he'll get a drive next year I don't know, but I hope he does, he's an unusual, and very strong addition to the F1 community. A character." - Sir Frank Williams again on Jacques Villeneuve
The Nojvnof1 2006 driver lineup - Jacques Villeneuve, Nico Rosberg, Christian Klein, Scott Speed.
