Toyota set to debut TF106 in Spain
Monday November 28 2005

Panasonic Toyota Racing will start their 2006 season preparations in Barcelona on Tuesday the 29th Noverber, at the Circuit de Catalunya.
Toyota traditionally launch their cars earlier than most teams in Formula One and have once again done it early. Toyota will reveal their 2006 race car with more than three months left before the first ’06 race date.

They obviously believe this will help them for next season.

"We have been working on the TF106 since the end of 2004, and the introduction of this car at such an early stage is a true testament to the work of the team and shows that we are able to react and push forward at a rate that is necessary to be at the forefront of Formula 1", said Toyota Technical Director Chassis, Mike Gascoyne.

"The TF106 that will run in Barcelona marks the first stage of development for this car with continuous improvements planned in the run-up to the first race. We are adopting a similar schedule to last season by testing the car early.”

“This allows us to develop the mechanical side of car thoroughly before we introduce a new aero package in time for the first race. This strategy helped us to be extremely competitive at the start 2005 and we are confident the same will happen in 2006."

"The front end of the TF106 is an evolution of our TF105B that raced in Japan and China, but the major design change for 2006 has been the implementation of the V8 engine in line with the new technical regulations, which has resulted in the redesign of the rear end," added Gascoyne.

Toyota had an impressive 2005 season with regard to the reliability of their engines. They had just one engine retirement this season. Gascoyne says their engine technicians have done an amazing job again and everyone at Toyota is motivated.

"Luca (Toyota’s Technical Director Engine)and his team have done an exceptional job, which has had a positive knock-on effect for the chassis department, a benefit enhanced by being based at the same factory, under the same roof. Having a pair of TF106s at our disposal for winter testing means that the development of our mechanical package will be significantly advanced."

Toyota Motorsport Chairman, Tsutomu Tomita, is also happy with the early development of a Toyota car and says the team are highly committed to succeeding in F1.

"Over the years Toyota has developed its own way of working,"

"The so-called Toyota Way and the Toyota Production Systems (TPS) manufacturing methodology act as the double helix of Toyota's corporate DNA.”

”It is this DNA that also runs through the veins of our Formula 1 team in Cologne. Only through our unique approach can we be optimistic of one day challenging for the world championship.”

“We are still at a very early stage of development with the TF106 but having our new car ready with three full months before the first race of the season in Bahrain, I hope we are demonstrating our will to succeed in F1."

The Toyota driving team has also been confirmed. Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher will be the two race drivers for Toyota next year. Ricardo Zonta will continue as the teams reserve driver with Olivier Panis will be the teams test driver.

Zonta has recently signed a one-year extension to his contract could have left the team and F1 had he wanted but chose to remain at the team.

"I am very pleased to have signed again with Panasonic Toyota Racing for the coming season," said Zonta.

"We enjoyed such a successful year in 2005 and I am sure this trend will continue.”

”I feel part of the family at Toyota and I would rather continue to offer them my services as third driver than become race driver in another series which I may not enjoy as much as Formula 1.”

”I feel that I have contributed significantly to Toyota's success and I look forward to extensive testing of the TF106 to help propel us into the top flight of Formula 1."

the back side and sidepods are quite different..though the front end seems to be a logical evolution of the tf105.....cant wait for their times ...bet they are less than 2 secs slower than the last test with v10.....

I like the new look. The rear wing in considerably lower than the 2005 model and as narain fan said the side pods are very different as well. I cant wait to see the other teams cars.

Doesn't look too different than their 2005 car, but im glad they'll be able to get a lot of testing done on this model.

Panasonic Toyota Racing experienced just one engine retirement over 19 race weekends in 2005, an impressive statistic given the increase to two-race reliability demands for last season. Such an enviable record, coupled with the strong performance of Toyota's V10 in its comparatively short F1 history, have provided invaluable foundations for development of the V8 power unit according to Technical Director Engine Luca Marmorini.

"With such strenuous reliability rules, we cannot afford to make jumps in the dark," explains Marmorini. "We cannot compromise the performance of the engine, so we have concentrated on reducing the performance loss. We have a strong core team of engine engineers here at Toyota, built up from six years of F1 engine development. This impassioned teamwork is our advantage and our strongest asset."

Mike Gascoyne is quick to back up his engine counterpart:

"Luca and his team have done an exceptional job, which has had a positive knock-on effect for the chassis department, a benefit enhanced by being based at the same factory, under the same roof. Having a pair of TF106s at our disposal for winter testing means that the development of our mechanical package will be significantly advanced."

The new Toyota RVX-06 V8 engine was testbenched for the first time on 21 March 2005, one day after the team scored its debut podium finish at the Malaysian Grand Prix. Since its first track run at the end of July, the V8 has completed 291 laps over eight separate days, a distance of 2,143km.

"A lot of teething problems have been solved through our ability to get the V8 testing at an early stage," adds Marmorini. "We have gathered a lot of data both on the track and in the factory. On 3 November we completed the required two race weekend mileage in the dyno for the first time and that has permitted us to start our winter testing programme with a fully "raceable" RVX-06 unit. Now our job is to redefine the limits of our engine and to push back the boundaries as much as we can before the new season."

This is my opinion analysing technically the car:
Actually the bigest difernces are:the front wing(in the middle its less rounded, more pointed),the rear difusser(much larger and curved than last year),the nosecone is a little bit thiner and pointer, the back suspension and drive-train and the back break ducts are quite di¡ferent(seems like they are less "arodinamically protected"than last year)with a thinest tail, and the front of the rear wing with the larger profile at the center..... :eusa_think: Apart from these one i dont see any other big differences(remember its just the first part of the tf106 development).
In fact i think there are no noticeable changes at the sidepods and chimmenys.
I hope this helps you,and i would be happy if you tell me any other details you see :clap3:

Only proble, is this car is very red and white, mimicing the Japanese flag. Isn't that what BAR are planning as well? I hope we are not going to get two (or even three - Super Aguri) near identical cars. A viewers nightmare!

to me the car seam quiet a bit shorter then last years. maybe its the lower rear wing. also, with the smaller nosecone they might be trying to do what meclarin does, they always seam to have very narrow nose cones along with renault.

on that note it will be intresting to see if Meclarin will use the viking horns again and if anybody else will try and incorporait something along those lines.

as for the side pods, they look to have a lot fewer winglets but i bet that during the season we will see that change

The Masters have returned.
"People were being killed left, right and center back then," [Phil Hill] says. "I became hyper-sensitive to the danger, and wasn't sure that I wasn't going to kill myself. As a result, racing brought out the worst in me. Without it, I don't know what kind of person I might have become. But I'm not sure I liked the person I did become, because I was selfish, irritable and defensive."

cheers for that little tech analysis everyone. At first view it didn't look that much different to the TF105, but now I can clearly see some more differences. This could be a masterstroke from the team considering Renault won't even be testing their engine until January I think it is. This head start in terms of the whole package may work in their favour come the first race.

"This year, with BMW, JV's going very well, and I'm pleased for him. Whether or not he'll get a drive next year I don't know, but I hope he does, he's an unusual, and very strong addition to the F1 community. A character." - Sir Frank Williams again on Jacques Villeneuve

You are right
Eddie Irvine: Many people are wrong about F1. They think the most remarkable perfomance you can achieve is at qualifying. It's a big error, because the most impressive perfomance you can reach is to race at qualifying rythm during lap after lap!
