Ferrari is due to unveil its new Formula 1 car on January 24 at Mugello but Michael Schumacher this morning gave the car its first shakedown runs at the team's Fiorano test track, completing just four laps of systems checks. Ferrari is hoping that with a change of rules and an appreciable advantage from testing more than the other teams it will be able to return to its previously dominant position but this looks increasingly unlikely to happen as other teams invest the resources to close the gap that Ferrari had thanks to its investment in the late 1990s. Schumacher himself mentioned last week that the team needs to invest more and says that if the new car is not competitive he is going to find it hard to motivate himself fully. It is hard to imagine the Schumacher of a few years ago saying such things and inevitably this has led to speculation about his future. Schumacher says that he will decide his long-future in the middle of the forthcoming season. His current contract expires at the end of the year.

This morning Michael Schumacher drove the first laps in Ferrari's F2006 at Fiorano. At 9.24 the German drove out of the Fiorano pitbox, Ferrari's home track, with bits of snow here and there around the track.

Michael Schumacher has debuted Ferrari's all-new, and unique looking, 2006 F1 race car. At Fiorano near Maranello HQ just after nine o'clock, the unliveried car - sporting several visual changes compared to the 'F2005' - pulled out of the pits for a first run. By lunch, with even a bit of snow falling, 37-year-old Schumacher - who won only the ill-fated US grand prix with the new car's predecessor - had completed as many as 35 laps, according to reports. Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo is on hand to witness the racer's first 'shake down test', ahead of the launch on 24 January. At first inspection, the new scarlet racer - likely to be designated 'F2006' - is showing off a more swooping nose, and wing mirrors uniquely mounted on the side pods.

Well they certainly have changed a few things in the F2006.

I swear there is something seductive about that nose...

Do you feel sorry for Michael in a way?

“Yes, we’d much rather beat him in a straight fight. He doesn’t deserve something like that…”

Thanks for the wonderful moments Schumi. You were controversial, but then again so was Ali, Zidane etc...

The big boys in red are looking for a replacement for MS, they know that he will quit because the car will not make him look good. He doesn't like that! Everybody knows that F1 is not about him anymore. BYE BYE :mf_tongue:  :mf_tongue:

Michelfx added some insulting parts to narain quote of grandprix. Childish imo, just say it plainly without adding it to article it is not part of.

typical ferrari, love the nose, so much better than the R26 or the Mp-21, they both have sucn nartrow nose cones.

i see that they went back to something that looks like the 04 front wing.
also, it would be fine with me if they just kept it just plain red for the entire season.

the one frase that comes to ind is: DONT MESS!

The changes I can notice are the swooped nose, mirrors on side pod, two struts going into the bottom of the rear wing and there seem to be a big slit in the flip up on the side pod in front of the right rear. I like it, especially in plain livery.

In 1958 Fangio decided to retire. His explanation for that was unique:

Fangio: "I came to test my car and after a few laps struggling with my `cache` I asked to my engineer: What did you change in the car?"
The engineer: "the shock absorbers. Why? They pay us to use..."
Fangio: "..so I realize that my time was come. I was the one that were in danger at the track, how could they change anything without asking me before? That was not the sport I like...besides that I'm too old...".
He was 47 and very quick yet...
