In 1958 Fangio decided to retire. His explanation for that was unique:

Fangio: "I came to test my car and after a few laps struggling with my `cache` I asked to my engineer: What did you change in the car?"
The engineer: "the shock absorbers. Why? They pay us to use..."
Fangio: "..so I realize that my time was come. I was the one that were in danger at the track, how could they change anything without asking me before? That was not the sport I like...besides that I'm too old...".
He was 47 and very quick yet...

On a more technical note, has anyone noticed the move to a "zero keel", similar to McLaren and Toyota?
"Schumacher has said he does not want to do anything bad or for anything bad to happen in this race, so I just hope that is what happens for his sake - but this shows how far Ferrari are prepared to go to help Michael win this Championship."

JV - Oct 25, 1997 - after Saturday Practice in the final round of the 1997 championship at Jerez, Spain. The next day would prove just how far Schumi was willing to go...................

Possibly, but testing should sort that out.

OK, I've seen the pics, read the articles, here is my take on the new BMW F1.06.

Car - This is one fantastic looking car. It looks great aesthetically and looks real racey, if you understand me. I like the look of the front end. It looks half C24, half MP4-20. In that I mean it has a similar, albeit more severely lowered nose, to the Sauber, and a front wing, with less of a shovel effect, to the McLaren. Having said that, it really resembles the front of the 2004 BAR. I am a little worried as I believe tri-plane wings worked more efficiently than bi plane and BMW are running a bi-plane wing. I'm sure they know what they're doing as I'm no aerodynamicist, perhaps I'm just worrying a little too much.

The sidepods look as good as those on the C24 whilst the side aero flick ups are different to that of the C24. I don't see any major changes in the rear wing though. Having said all that, I read that the first update to the car is already in production. We will most likely see a different aero package on the F1.06 in the tests prior to Bahrain - we're already starting to see the effects of the bigger budget JV has long called for!

As for the front suspension, I noticed a zero keel layout when I saw the pics last night and think it will be a good move. This is as it proved strong on the McLaren and Toyota and if the boys at Hinwil have done their job right, then it could be strong on the BMW too.

This also sorts out a major problem that the C24 had. The C24's suspension was designed for BStone tyres, hence didn't use the Michelin tyres to it's maximum. A 'b' car would have had to be made to rectify the problem however the budget wasn't there, hence Jacques and Felipe had to make do. Now this problem has been rectified, we will see the full potential of the car I believe.

Livery - Stunning, Brilliant. The logos are perfectly placed and aren't cluttered in any way. I like the way they have blended the blue and white and added abit of BMW red. The overalls look rather snazzy whilst the merchandise range looks freakin sweet. I can't wait to get my hands on some of it.

The package as a whole looks very promising. The driver lineup is one of the most experience with the feisty Jacques, put bluntly, racing for his career. They'll be testing every week possible up until the first race with two cars, and probably 3 at times with Kubica joining them in most likely the C24B. I am really impressed with the BMW outfit in this early stage.

I just this minute saw a report on the car on tv. It looks brilliant on TV, and it was the first time I'd heard a V8 in an F1 car. Not THAT big a difference, but you can tell. JV talked about having a bigger budget which will improve the car.

He was an absolutely born racing driver - look at the way he'd bang wheels with Michael, pass people on the outside, that kind of thing" -Sir Frank Williams on Jacques Villeneuve
"This year, with BMW, JV's going very well, and I'm pleased for him. Whether or not he'll get a drive next year I don't know, but I hope he does, he's an unusual, and very strong addition to the F1 community. A character." - Sir Frank Williams again on Jacques Villeneuve

this is what Willy said about the suspension, had already posted it in the thread "Fashion Show Launches Bmw Campaign".as it was a part of a huge article, perhaps funkejay(and a few others missed it)
so here it is..

A totally new feature of the BMW Sauber F1.06 is the design of the front and rear suspension.

On the front axle, the layout is influenced significantly by the higher attachment points of the lower wishbones, which reflect the focus on aerodynamics. The rear axle is also a new construction. Here, modified kinematics aimed at responding better to the Michelin tyres were at the centre of the engineers’ considerations. As Rampf confirms…

“The new rear suspension geometry will allow us to exploit the potential of the Michelin tyres much more effectively.”

Lowering the front section also allows the assembly position of the pedals and inboard front-axle components to drop by a similar degree, as well as ensuring a lower position for the driver’s legs. All these factors help to bring down the car’s centre of gravity.

BMW Sauber F1.06 – technical data
Suspension: upper and lower wishbones (front and rear), inboard springs and dampers, actuated by pushrods (Sachs Race Engineering)

The livery is very nice and good looking...but how the cars will be called on the grid?
I mean, the team name is BMW Sauber F.1..but regarding the stats, will it be considered as Sauber or as BMW? The car is a BMW F.106 or a Sauber-BMW F.106?I never understood since the launch of the new team name three months ago

Thanks nojv....I've found in formula1.com that Sauber-BMW is not going to be considered a brand new team regarding the stats but it is simply the old Sauber team with BMW engines, owned by the german carmaker..the racing license is still from Switzerland and the car is going to be entered the world championship as Sauber-BMW F1.06

Then all of a sudden in about 3 or 4 years time the car will be renamed "Team BMW", and win the championship later that year. Just remember you heard it first on TF1 from Wez!

Yes, the team will be renamed ‘Team BMW F1’ or something like that, once it’s established and capable of real success.  MT and his cronies are only keeping the Sauber name in the official title to keep the link to the minnows and to deflect expectations…a very astute, but highly predictable, move.
