Oxford, January 27, 2006.
The WilliamsF1 Team today announced a major new sponsorship association with Tata, one of India’s most successful multi-disciplinary
commercial conglomerates. The partnership will see the Tata brand displayed on the FW28’s nose, the drivers’ helmets and overalls, as well as on various locations across the team environment.
An industrial giant, the Tata Group comprises a network of 92 operating companies in seven business sectors, including information systems and communications, engineering, materials, services, energy, consumer products and chemicals, and is one of the driving forces behind the re-emergence of the Asian Tiger phenomenon.
Founded in the last quarter of the 19th century, Tata is today one of India’s largest businesses with revenues equivalent to almost 2.6% of the nation’s gross domestic product. The Group employs in excess of 220,000 people and exports products and services to over 140 countries worldwide. With a product portfolio ranging from motor cars to tea and from internet services to luxury hotels, the Tata Group can justifiably
claim to touch the lives of every one of India’s billion inhabitants on a daily basis.
Inherent in the fabric of the Tata Group’s guiding principles, expounded since its inception, are the core values of integrity, understanding, excellence, unity and responsibility. Born at the time of de-colonisation, the Group aligned business opportunities with nation building and it is this same ethos that is ingrained in the Group’s decision-making process today.
The alliance with the WilliamsF1 Team will provide a unique platform for Tata to communicate its blanket of competencies to a global audience. In particular, Tata will use the partnership to illustrate its technical proficiencies through a range of initiatives, including software development and CAD design. The union of Williams, a niche British engineering company and the industrial muscle of Tata, promises to deliver a formidable range of benefits to both parties.
Following the announcement, Mr. Romit Chaterji, the Tata Group’s Sr. Vice President, Corporate Affairs, commented, “We are delighted to be partnering a world-class team like WilliamsF1. Their successful track record over the years in Formula One and their passion for the sport is what sets them apart. In addition, we are happy to support Narain’s F1
racing career for another year. Moreover, this association extends beyond mere sponsorship with WilliamsF1 as they will be exploring opportunities to source high technology products and services from the Tata Group.”
Frank Williams, Team Principal of the WilliamsF1 Team, confirmed, “To welcome a company of Tata’s calibre to the Williams sponsor community is enormously satisfying. Formula One will not only deliver sound business to business opportunities to the Group, but the team will also benefit from their considerable expertise in various technical fields.”

Weeks ago people started to make Williams funeral, is it my impression or Williams have clearly more sponsors this year? HP out but RBS increased their sponsorship at HP´s level, then we have: Battery, Phillips, MobileCast and Tata in and QinetiQ (which can be VERY valuable for Williams, not only financially...) and Reuters renewed their partnerships, looks like SFW is trying a strong comeback this year.

Mobilecast to boost Williams tech capability. The Williams team has unveiled an new technical sponsor, Japan's Mobilecast Corporation, as part of the build-up to its official 2006 season launch, to be held at its Grove base today [Friday].
Mobilecast is renowned as a pioneer in state-of-the-art Bluetooth technology, and it is envisaged that team and sponsor will work together on a number of technical projects using Mobilecast's wireless and sensing technology to improve Williams' communication requirements.
"In an environment like Williams, which is driven by technology, I am rarely surprised by mainstream technology presentations," team boss Frank Williams commented, "However, what has been demonstrated by Mobilecast is particularly impressive and cutting-edge. The opportunity to partner such an innovative and forward-thinking organisation is an important one, and I hope that we can prove to Mobilecast over the long-term that their investment in the WilliamsF1 Team will be both a sound and technically rewarding decision."
Mobilecast hopes to develop its brand beyond its current Japanese borders, and sees the association with Williams as a platform for international product and brand development. The sponsorship will see the Williams brand applied to a range of Mobilecast products, which will become available to consumers during the course of the season, while Mobilecast's logo will appear on the FW28's rear wing and nose cone, as well as the team's trucks and pit garages.

It was with some surprise, then, that a keen-eyed observer recently spotted the brand's logo on the helmet of Williams' new 'Friday' driver Alex Wurz.
Wurz, 31, was test driver at McLaren until the end of the 2005 season.
'Direxiv' is apparently a personal Wurz sponsor, and the logo will also appear on his Williams-branded overalls and cap this year.
Interestingly, Alex's wife Julia - a former press officer for Benetton - now works in a similar role at Direxiv

Indeed. Add Allianz to that list as they feature heavily on the rear wing, whilst the side pods are blank, which should be open to the right buyer.

Meanwhile in Davos
Although the motorsport industry has not been represented at the World Economic Summit at Davos in Switzerland we hear that Tata Consultancy Services has used the opportunity to highlight its involvement with the sport as a technology partner of Ferrari by displaying a Ferrari F2003 GA in one of the cafes in the town during a reception it held for WEF delegates. The Ferrari deal with Tata is separate from the deal between Tata and Williams, the huge Indian conglomerate having a large number of subsidiaries which have done deals with different F1 teams

Still not all rosy. The support from BMW was far far bigger, to the tune of 150 million according to one of the reports I read.

Williams (who isn't negative about joining up with a manufacturer again some time in the future): The position we're in isn't as good as it was last year. You don't get an advantage losing out on a partner like BMW. We won't be that bad though, like many people think we might be in for a surprise.''

Sudipta Datta
Pune, February 4: INDIA may not have an F1 winner on the tracks yet, (sorry, Mr Narain Karthikeyan) but software companies like home-grown Tata Consultancy Services and UK-headquartered-India-driven Xansa are in the paddock of two major teams, Ferrari and reigning champion Renault. Now, more companies are keen to join the race.
Last month, when the Williams F1 team announced a major new partnership with the Tata Group, it opened up avenues for at least two group companies, one the Pune-based Tata Technologies, which already provides design and engineering services to the largest OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) in the world including General Motors, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, Toyota, Volkswagen, Honda, Nissan and Fiat.
Though Tata Technology officials are tightlipped about the project, Romit Chaterji, senior VP, Corporate Affairs, Tata Group, admitted that the company is ‘‘exploring the possibility of supplying products and services to Williams, which will include software applications like CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) useful to F1 teams.’’
And though ‘‘nothing has been finalised’’ yet, Chaterji said it’s significant that Tata group companies can think of producing not only to international standards but for the most competitive racing cars, the ultimate in engineering technology.
Interestingly, the Tatas which had supported Karthikeyan’s F1 drive last year when he was with Jordan (now Midland) is now backing his efforts with Team Williams. For, while Australian Mark Webber and Germany’s Nico Rosberg are the two main drivers for Williams this coming season, the second test driver is Karthikeyan for the 19 races in the F1 calendar of 2006.
The other group company which may supply to Williams, a niche British engineering company, is Tata Advanced Material which designs and manufactures advanced composites for high-tech products like parts for space aircraft. The company manufactures armour products such as bulletproof jackets and helmets and armoured panels for battle tanks and special applications.
In December 2004, TCS signed a multi-year contract with then champion Scuderia Ferrari to provide IT and engineering services, thus signalling India’s shift towards providing high-end outsourcing. According to the National Association of Software and Service Companies, India will provide $8 billion of engineering services to the world by 2007-08.
At Tata Technologies’ Charles Correa-designed campus in Pune, complete with a courtyard and designer pottery, engineers are often divided into ‘Ford’ or ‘GM’ or ‘Toyota’ groups, paying exclusive attention to a particular client. They may soon start preparing a team for Williams too.
