Mosley predicts A1 failure.

The series needs more star drivers...

FIA president Max Mosley says Sheikh Maktoum's 'A1 Grand Prix' open wheeler concept will not succeed because it lacks true star drivers.

The Briton, 65, likened the so-called 'world cup of motor sport' to the FIA's Group C sports car championship of the 80s -- an interesting racing concept that ultimately failed.

''Something like A1 only works if the biggest and most famous names are on board -- and that is not the case.''

Even the involvement of legendary F1 faces like John Surtees, and world champions like Alan Jones and Emerson Fittipaldi, is not helping A1 to truly compete with formula one, according to Mosley.

Contrasting A1 with Group C, he said: ''We had all the big marques - Mercedes, Jaguar, Toyota, Peugeot - but only a handful of spectators at the races.

''The fans were not really interested in the technology or the teams; they wanted to see (drivers Alain) Prost and (Ayrton) Senna.

''It is something the F1 teams forget even today.''

Whilst I have watched ALL of the A1 races so far, I must say it becomes somewhat BORING, because the commentators usually only talk about the COUNTRY of the car in front or wherever, not the drivers name. Some times they mention the driver but most times it the Country, and I must say some of the driving does leave a lot to be desired!

I really thought this form would be a good "Fill in" during the winter months till F1 came back but not so sure now!

A1 is crap, I am beyond caring for it now with Bahrain so close.

It was never meant to be a challenger to F1, hence why it's run in F1's off season. The concept is good and the racing has been of a good standard most times. I've seen all races and I'm a fan of the series.

"When Jacques was with us, he was a very aggressive driver, fiercely competitive, mentally hard as nails. Very quick with it, very gifted. A bright fellow, undoubtedly, very intelligent. He was an absolutely born racing driver - look at the way he'd bang wheels with Michael, pass people on the outside, that kind of thing" -Sir Frank Williams on Jacques Villeneuve
"This year, with BMW, JV's going very well, and I'm pleased for him. Whether or not he'll get a drive next year I don't know, but I hope he does, he's an unusual, and very strong addition to the F1 community. A character." - Sir Frank Williams again on Jacques Villeneuve
The Nojvnof1 2006 driver lineup - Jacques Villeneuve, Nico Rosberg, Christian Klein, Scott Speed.

well I still watch (record) all the free to air A1 races but it seems LACKING, I think maybe get rid of the commentators, god they are so boring to listen to, and MAYBE introduce the Country DRIVERS that are participating in this particular race would help..

As for the cars Livery, I for one cannot pick Australia from say South Africa, or if my memory serves me correct even Brazil, all seem same livery, New Zealand is simple Black, Uk is OK, Holland yep ok the rest? buggered if I know who they are ???

Which is why GP Masters worked, and has now evolved into a full fledged series. By very definition, it had drivers people have actually heard of, and hell some overtaking thrown in for  good measure, which A1 promised from day 1 but by all accounts has rarely delivered.

Well personally i've lost a bit of interest in A1, i did however enjoy watching our Home race live, though the SA race was an exception.

I would say that A1 needs to beef up the cars a bit more, make them a bit more thoroughbred, i mean an A1 GP car pales in comparison to a F1 car. Also the introduction of full pit stops (tyre changes, refuelling etc.) would help greatly by increasing the unpredictability of races. They could make it alot more exciting by just doing those few things.
Martin: ”I reckon (Alonso) is out front listening to the Kaiser Chiefs now, and looking forward to my CD collection turning up.”
James: “Have you ever heard of them, ‘cause he caught you out, didn’t he, that guy? (Martin had interviewed Peanut from the Kaiser Chiefs on the gridwalk.)
Martin: “I’m more into the Arctic Monkeys, to be honest.”

Martin:  “Kimi Raikkonen’s down here somewhere – let’s see if we can get two or maybe even three words plus VAT out of him today.”

I think its a bit stupid calling it the world cup of motorsport when the drivers are so crap. A true world cup of motorsport would have the best drivers from each country, and that would actually be pretty good

That is very true. AUstralia's A1 drivers tend to be drivers who recently left Formula Ford which is a rather low series. I dont know about other countries but most of Australia's best drivers are in the V8 Supercars.
