The series needs more star drivers...
FIA president Max Mosley says Sheikh Maktoum's 'A1 Grand Prix' open wheeler concept will not succeed because it lacks true star drivers.
The Briton, 65, likened the so-called 'world cup of motor sport' to the FIA's Group C sports car championship of the 80s -- an interesting racing concept that ultimately failed.
''Something like A1 only works if the biggest and most famous names are on board -- and that is not the case.''
Even the involvement of legendary F1 faces like John Surtees, and world champions like Alan Jones and Emerson Fittipaldi, is not helping A1 to truly compete with formula one, according to Mosley.
Contrasting A1 with Group C, he said: ''We had all the big marques - Mercedes, Jaguar, Toyota, Peugeot - but only a handful of spectators at the races.
''The fans were not really interested in the technology or the teams; they wanted to see (drivers Alain) Prost and (Ayrton) Senna.
''It is something the F1 teams forget even today.''

"You just don't mess with Jacques Villeneuve" - Murray Walker, 1997 Hungarian GP.
"When Jacques was with us, he was a very aggressive driver, fiercely competitive, mentally hard as nails. Very quick with it, very gifted. A bright fellow, undoubtedly, very intelligent. He was an absolutely born racing driver - look at the way he'd bang wheels with Michael, pass people on the outside, that kind of thing" -Sir Frank Williams on Jacques Villeneuve
"This year, with BMW, JV's going very well, and I'm pleased for him. Whether or not he'll get a drive next year I don't know, but I hope he does, he's an unusual, and very strong addition to the F1 community. A character." - Sir Frank Williams again on Jacques Villeneuve
The Nojvnof1 2006 driver lineup - Jacques Villeneuve, Nico Rosberg, Christian Klein, Scott Speed.

Which is why GP Masters worked, and has now evolved into a full fledged series. By very definition, it had drivers people have actually heard of, and hell some overtaking thrown in for good measure, which A1 promised from day 1 but by all accounts has rarely delivered.

I would say that A1 needs to beef up the cars a bit more, make them a bit more thoroughbred, i mean an A1 GP car pales in comparison to a F1 car. Also the introduction of full pit stops (tyre changes, refuelling etc.) would help greatly by increasing the unpredictability of races. They could make it alot more exciting by just doing those few things.
James: “Have you ever heard of them, ‘cause he caught you out, didn’t he, that guy? (Martin had interviewed Peanut from the Kaiser Chiefs on the gridwalk.)
Martin: “I’m more into the Arctic Monkeys, to be honest.”
Martin: “Kimi Raikkonen’s down here somewhere – let’s see if we can get two or maybe even three words plus VAT out of him today.”

That is very true. AUstralia's A1 drivers tend to be drivers who recently left Formula Ford which is a rather low series. I dont know about other countries but most of Australia's best drivers are in the V8 Supercars.
