Yup. And every country also has it's share of intelligent, decent people. Which leads me to 'phile's post:

I think I'd have a dim view of American Intelligence no matter where I live.  Remind yourself of The Tonight Show's "Jay Walking" segments and The Man Show's segment on "End Women's Suffrage".  Those were the two came to mind when I made that first post.  Also, neither Al Gore nor Michael Moore came from the South, and since both they (and a lot of others before them) made it big they are proof that they must be representative of a much larger population of horses' arses.

I agree. On the otherhand i think Education standards are just as important as raw intelligence. That is where i think America is lacking as your education system (particularly history) as from what ive heard it is far too centred on American history and doesnt really do history on world events from other countries perspectives. For example i learnt about Australian history in years 9 and 10 but for years 11 and 12 i learnt about WW1 from the perspective of every major country which was involved and i also learnt about the history of Cuba and Russia.

Not true. Look at a list of the world's top universities. You'll find the top 100 are DOMINATED by American universities. Every public education system has it's bad, and good, schools.

I dont know what the top universities are but im refering to High School education. I was having a agruement with a American a year ago when is a doctor (GP) and you know what we argued about, if Australia was a continent or not. He seemed convinced that Australia was only a island and no matter what i said i could not convince him otherwise.

Ah....I'm afraid I can't really argue that one. The high school I went to was quite good, but that was twenty years ago and times change. I know that I had to transfer my daughter to a better school because her former one was teaching far below her level. I've come to find out that it was still above California state standards...so there may be something to what you are saying, ykick.

I have to say, though, I was easily able to transfer her to a much better school, so I would say you are partly right. The standards are quite low, but not all schools teach to that low standard.

I personally think that in every school in the world there should be a subject called world history as that would eliminate alot of the ignorance in the world about other countries. I dont know about other people but i found learning about Cubian and Russian history fascinating as i was learning something new and it was on subjects which i previously had no knowledge about.

My own experiences chatting with Americans on the Internet gave me the same impressions as Ykick's. I've been using different chat programs for 12 years now and most Americans I've encountered in cyberspace:
a) Have no idea where Southamerica is. Many of them were surprised that Southamerica is south of USA!
B) Something that really amazes me because even little kids now this here is that most AMericans I've encountered wouldn't believe me that, for example, it's winter here when it's summer in USA. Some of them even feel outraged because they thought I was laughing at them.
c) And don't even get me started on your insistence in ignoring the metric system!
Though I know it is being taught at schools :) You should really use it!

This doesn't mean Americans are dumber than other countries, of course. But they seem to lack some things that are considered rather basic here. Anyways, I have no idea how educated the average Argentinian you can find on the Internet is, so I have no idea if we are even worse or not

Yes but what they neglect to teach u in america is that whilst the british were fighting over there in 17-whatever it was, we were also warring with the french in the english channel, fighting over ownership of the little bit of sea! and whats with the american flag outside every single school? and 'swearing allegiance' as a child? its like nazi germany

jeremy clarkson was in america and was on the street asking people questions like 'where is scotland' or 'name 3 european countries', and he didnt find a single person who could give him a correct answer. Was funny to watch but its things like that on British television which probably causes us to think that USA is dim. George W Bush doesnt exactly help matters.

Just out of interest does any american here know where scotland is? (and if u look it up on the net, then shame on you!)

That is true but i am perfectly willing to admitt that my knowledge of geography in America is extremely poor. It would be like me asking you to point to where dunnydoo is on a map. I can however point to nearly every country in the world which is more important than knowing where everything is in America.

While I hate to agree with ykick, he is right in saying that the high schools in america need change. Having just graduated just under a year ago I have realized after getting to university, how little I learned. No child left behind is completely killing small schools and probably has close to the same effect on larger ones. My graduating class had just under 50 people, coming from rural Iowa, and the opportunity for advanced classes were very little. If I had wanted to I could have had all my required classes done been able to graduate by the end of my sophmore year so basically my last to years were spent treading water until I got to leave. I did get the opportunity to take calculus and some world civilizations courses from the local college, which I regretably didn't take to seriously (didn't think the credits would transfer but it turns out that they did).  On top of all the a lot of the good teachers are retiring and being replaced with mediocre teachers who are just there because they couldn't hack it in the corporate world (there are a select few new teachers that are also good teachers).  It's just seems to be from my point a view a great big clusterfu<k.

Ykick, you are getting yourself carried away. You can't compare SF with Dunnydoo!!!! SF is a world wide known city with almost 800,000 inhabitants. Dunnydoo has 834 (according to the Wikkipedia).

And it's Dunedoo

The only problem I would have with this is that you fail to mention the 'no child left behind' failure is more due to the State's failed implementation than the whole idea of it. Seriously, the federal government passed the standards and left the states to individually decide what to do. That has led to state-wide corruption of a good idea. The feds also dropped the ball by not regulating it on a national level.

As you've just come from High School, I'll bow to your greater knowledge in everything else you've stated.
Don't rest in peace, Bruce. Raise Hell.
