Toro Rosso unveils controversial STR2

Scuderia Toro Rosso's contentious 2007 car broke cover in Barcelona on Tuesday.

Tonio Liuzzi, who has been re-signed as one of the team’s race drivers for this season, strapped himself into the STR2 at the Circuit de Catalunya late in the afternoon.

The Toro Rosso mechanics worked through last night and throughout the day to ready the chassis after parts were flown in at the last minute.

The STR2, which sports a striking red and dark blue colour scheme, has been at the centre of the dispute over customer cars, which has been the biggest talking point of the F1 off-season.

Williams and Spyker have threatened to protest the legality of the car, which is believed to be heavily derivative of the Red Bull RB3 designed by Adrian Newey – albeit adapted to accommodate a Ferrari rather than Renault engine.

But speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday morning before the car was unveiled, STR part-owner Gerhard Berger remained adamant that the team has complied with the rules.

“Our car is not a ‘customer car’,” he insisted.

“A customer car is when you go to another team, give them money and they give you a car.

“This is not the case with us.

“And before we went down the route of working with Red Bull Technology, we took our own legal advice and checked it with the FIA.

“I am completely satisfied that our car is in compliance with the rules.”

Technical director Alex Hitzinger was at pains to emphasise the differences between the STR2 and its Red Bull cousin.

“Apart from the obvious one that the chassis is different to accommodate a different engine, nearly all the major elements are different too, including bodywork, wings, management systems and so on,” he said.

When you think about it this car is quite amazing. It is a combination of

RB3
MP4/20
STR2

We should call it the

STR-RB-MP4/20-3-2  :D

Agree, the livery is ok but I would like them to do something different.

Now hopefully Red Bull as a whole can sort the cars out before they are due in Melbourne. You would like to think that with 4 cars testing the development time would have to improve. :prayhands:

Never liked it much last year. Hmm.

I thought they might have mixed up the colours a little more but I suppose they didn't on the Red Bull.

Nice find anyway.

What a name loool ... let us pick the name of the team also :P See how long it is " Scuderia Toro Rosso Red Bull Racing Team McLaren - Ferrari Renault Mercedes " hahahahah !

Another McLarenesque car ... i guess that the look and the new twin-keel system will not help Red Bull or Toro Rosso ... but we can at least compare both cars to see which was the best option to move from Renault to Ferrari or keep the Ferraris ...

i like having a large grid but I hope STR score a big fat ZERO in 2007. Not fair on teams like williams who have to build and design their own cars.

I am sure Adrian will have to work over time to manage the expectations from both the teams, seems difficult.

Am I the only one that thinks the car would look kind of cool with the livery designed after the can. The angled blue and silver on the main body and wings of the car. The two bulls facing each other on the rear wing and hows about a pop tab by the fuel door. They might even be able to get some money out of Mel Gibson for sponsorship as it could even look a little Braveheartesque.

If your never over eight-tenths, or whatever, because your thinking about a shunt, your not going as quick as you can. And if your not doing that, your not a racing driver. Some guys in Formula 1... well, to me, they're not racing drivers. They drive racing cars, that's all. They're doing half a job. And in that case, I wonder why they do it at all..."

the cars look identical, its ridiculous. how can they call themselves a team, what have they had to do? bolt a ferrari engine onto a RBR car and then see if it works?

yeah that looks good. with a little tweaking im sure it could be amazing and youd be able to tell the red bull and torro rosso apart at no more than a glance.

Well, being so similar, we could see STR beating regularly. Although DC and MW are very good.

I love the Blue and Silver colour-scheme and on the new body it would look ace.

I really dont see that happening. Coulthard dominated Liuzzi back in 2005 and as far as i can tell Speed isnt any faster than his teammate.
