Not Charles Leclerc, but Carlos Sainz will start from pole position at Silverstone on Sunday afternoon. The Spaniard set an excellent qualifying time in the rain and secured himself a good starting position. Leclerc wishes his teammate well, although he would have preferred to be at the front himself.

The Monegasque has failed to win a race since the Australian Grand Prix, widening the gap on Max Verstappen in the world championship. His hope was to close that gap at Silverstone, but his team-mate proved faster on one lap.

Leclerc hopes for one-two for Ferrari

Leclerc therefore has the daunting task ahead of him to not only pass Verstappen but also Sainz for victory in England. The latter will not relinquish his position lightly, as it could be his first career Formula One victory.

"I think of course, I will be very happy if Carlos wins the race tomorrow, but I'm not going to hide that I want to win too," Leclerc told at the FIA press conference. "But I think what is most important is that we finished one-two, whatever way around it is, and if we can play strategic moves in between the cars, I'm pretty sure that we will."
