DRS zones during GP weekends are becoming a big talking point. While it seems that the zones will not disappear in the near future, F1 will take action. This will start as soon as the upcoming first Grand Prix in 2023.

DRS zone 3 shortened in Bahrain

The circuit layout for the Bahrain GP posted by the FIA shows that the final DRS zone on the start/finish straight has been shortened. According to Motorsport.com it involves 80 metres. With this, the FIA will start 2023 straight away with an idea discussed after the end of last season. With the 2022 cars being able to follow each other better and be less affected by dirty air behind another car, the DRS effect is sometimes far too strong.

Therefore, according to many, the artificial overtaking aid misses its purpose. Formula 1 technical director Pat Symonds said that the DRS will not go out in the near future, but felt that changes should take place and that the DRS should also be contrasted with an assist mechanism that supports with more downforce.

At least the initial ideas seem to have been heeded in Bahrain this weekend. The final DRS zone is now a lot later after the last corner, turn 15, than last year. The DRS zone 3 detection point does remain just before turn 14. No changes have been made to DRS zone 1, after turn 3, and DRS zone 2, after turn 10, for the time being.
