Lewis Hamilton topped the timing screens at the end of FP1 in Monaco, but a few hours later in FP2 he struggled for pace and finished in an unfamiliar eighth place, admitting that he and his Mercedes team do not understand the problem. Hamilton told journalists at the end of the first day in Monaco, 'I can't [explain it] because I don't understand it. FP1 was really good and the car was feeling great and then it was a night and day difference, black and white, in FP2.'
