Claire Williams and Paddy Lowe admitted they didn't expect to score Williams's first double-points finish of the 2017 Formula 1 season in Austria after its worst qualifying in three years. Williams had no explanation for losing both cars in Q1 for the first time since the rain-hit session for the 2014 British Grand Prix, with Felipe Massa and Lance Stroll 17th and 18th respectively. But a first-lap collision that involved Daniil Kvyat, Fernando Alonso and Max Verstappen, helped Massa and Stroll gain seven places apiece before the end of the opening lap.
