FIA updates Super Licence points for 2018

The FIA has updated its Super Licence points reward system for 2018, placing a greater focus on Formula 2 as the final step towards reaching Formula 1. The points system for gaining an FIA Super Licence required to race in F1 was introduced in 2016, with drivers requiring 40 points through a three-year period. Changes have been made for 2018 to encourage drivers to pass through F2 before reaching F1, aiding the FIA’s push for a pyramid structure for junior single-seater motorsport. Previously, a full 40 points was awarded for a top-three finish in GP2 or winning the title in IndyCar, FIA European Formula 3, Formula E or the WEC’s LMP1 class.
