Niki Lauda’s near-fatal accident at the Nurburgring in 1976 After Niki Lauda urged drivers to boycott the Nurburgring race due to safety standards, which was rejected, he suffered a near-fatal accident. On lap two his Ferrari swerved off track, hit an embankment and burst into flames after colliding with Brett Lunger’s car. Trapped in the wreckage, Lauda suffered severe burns, lost his right ear and inhaled toxic gas which damaged his lungs and blood before slipping into a coma.
