Formula 1 wants 12 teams, but only if they can be competitive

Formula 1 should seek to expand to a 12-team grid, according to FIA President Jean Todt and championship CEO Chase Carey, but only if any potential newcomers can be competitive. Formula 1’s grid size has fluctuated across the decades but has not featured 12 teams since the demise of HRT at the end of 2012. Caterham’s exit after 2014 left Formula 1 with 10 teams for 2015 but Haas’ arrival the following year boosted numbers, albeit briefly, until Manor departed at the end of the same season.
