Eduardo Freitas and Niels Wittich were appointed as Formula 1's two new race directors after the 2021 Abu Dhabi debacle. The two men alternated, but in the closing stages of the 2022 season, only Wittich was in charge of Formula 1 weekends. Freitas disappeared from the scene after the chaotic Japan Grand Prix.
