Most Beautiful F1 Car

Recommended Posts

As I am new to the Forum I'm late to the topic. Nonetheless, I'll bore you with my 2 cents. The Rumble Strip noted that personal selection is most likely swayed by the "...era in which we grew up with F1..." and I can't disagree. I have some overlap with choices by other members (such as the stunning Maserati 250F), but with the exception of the 1954/55 Mercedes W196, they are all from the mid-1960's... which gives you an idea of my age.

The Lotus 49, Dan Gurney's Eagle Weslake and the Ferrari 312 of the 1966/67 seasons were all lovely cars. For all my appreciation of aerodynamics, there is something simple, purposeful and also elegant about the Formula One cars in the 1960's before they 'sprouted wings,' although that in no way discounts beautiful designs from the 1970's through present day.

I agree. The cars I grew up with are the ones that made the biggest impression. The Eagle is just a thing of great beauty, and looks even better in the metal than in photos. Better than the 49 to my eyes, but it's all subjective of course.

And welcome to the forums, Persevere.

How to choose? Perhaps the old saying that the fastest car is the most beautiful? Or should I go with sleek lines? Flashy paintjob? Unique stance? Each of those things would get me a different car. Hm.

Ok, the most beautiful F1 car for me has to be the one that hardens my crotch and makes me want to get on my hands and knees and lick the sides.

1967 Eagle Gurney Weslake V-12.

It's a tie between Lewis Hamilton and the Ferrari 312 (probably the original, since the 312B had wings, so I'm assuming the generic 312 was the cool one that didn't have them). I'd probably have to say the Lotus 49.

Lewis Hamilton is now a car?

Oi! Georgia! You really ought to come an' knock me up one day, give me a ring first, I believe you 'ave the address of my new castle, I've 'ad to move, got a smaller castle in Wales, cheap as chips really, just as good, too, though when you 'ave to spend a penny, you 'ave to take the lift to the loo, all a bit to get me knickas in a twist, but I just 'ave to show you me new bowler cap, it's quite a cracking piece of dog's bollocks that 'at, an' we can 'ave a spin in me new TX4 taxi, and we can 'ave a chat with SuperNanny (she's the queen of England now, idn't she?), and you can see me new teeth, I've 'ad a doc make 'em even worse than before so I could fit in a tad better with me mates, and then we can 'ave Marmite, good ol' Marmite, I like to rub it all over me pen......tagonal-shaped slices of bread an' eat it. Well, I've to be goin' to Tescos in my lorry to pick up some Walker's crisps, they're the bee's knees. All 'ail the queen, an' god save 'er, too, she's really rather in need of a good savin', idn't she?

In early 1968 I was at AAR in Santa Ana Ca. while my dad ported and polished Offy heads for the Gurney Eagle indy cars, I hung out with the guys. The 67 Spa Westlake Eagle was in the compound and the mechanics had to move it back inside so they asked me to steer it while they pushed it in, I was a tall skinny kid all of 14 and I gladly jumped in and did as they asked... Without a doubt the most Beautiful F1 Car of all time, the 67 Gurney Eagle Westlake!biggrin.gif

...designed by a very young Tony Southgate; Gurney won Spa in 1967. Good to see this post, friend. A very minor adjustment, if I may: it was an Eagle-Weslake.

Clark's Lotus 49

Williams FW14B

I also used to like the Orange Arrows car and the Jaguar was nice too.

While I can't disagree with the significance and longevity of the 250F making it perhaps the greatest F1 car ever, I'll always hold the Gurney Weslake V12 Eagle to be the most beautiful.
