Diffuser row grows ahead of Melbourne

By Jonathan NobleSaturday, March 21st 2009, 10:31 GMT

1237631528.jpgThe growing row over diffuser designs in Formula 1 appears to be heading for a showdown protest at the Australian Grand Prix, with the FIA saying it is now too late to resolve the matter before the start of the season.

The designs of the diffusers on the Brawn, Toyota and Williams have led to questions from rival teams, who think the trio are unfairly using a bigger diffuser than was originally intended by the regulations.

So far the FIA has said that it believes the designs are within the wording of the regulations, but the matter has moved up a gear with at least one team believed to have written to the governing body to state its belief that the design is illegal.

Now, FIA president Max Mosley has said that he thinks the matter can only be sorted out in Australia - because it is too late to organise a formal hearing before the first race.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph on Saturday, Mosley said: "It's a very clever device and you can make a very good case for saying that it's legal and a very good case for saying that it's illegal. It's going to be difficult.

"What's actually happened is that teams are saying 'We think it's illegal for this and this reason.'

"If there had been more time before the detailed objections to the system were sent in, I would probably have sent it to the FIA Court of Appeal before Australia. And actually I have given thought to that this week. But there isn't time. It wouldn't be fair. I think the thing will probably come to some sort of a head in Australia."

The most likely outcome from the current situation is that one or more teams may choose to lodge a protest at the first race of the season - either once scrutineering has taken place on Thursday or after the finish of the race.

Mosley added: "One possibility is that all the teams agree that it is illegal, and therefore all the teams shouldn't have it from Barcelona. But then those teams who say it is legal will say 'Why should we do that?' And those that say it's illegal will say 'Why should we lose an advantage for four races?'

"And so probably what will happen is it will end up going to the stewards, who will make a decision. That will almost certainly be appealed by whichever side is disadvantaged. And then that will go to our Court of Appeal and be hammered out.

"It's not straightforward. I have an open mind on it at the moment - I can see it going either way. I really can. But somebody has to make their mind up and fortunately it's not my job."

Nothing really new there.

Well done the teams for finding loop holes and gaining an advantage. Ferrari have done it for years and are very good at it, to me its not cheating, its just thinking outside of the box and gaining an advantage where other teams dont think to develop. The rules are the same for everybody so there isnt a rule for the others to go and copy them.

No wonder why Brawn GP and Toyota look good in testing...

The wording is all off. Either it is allowed or not. To say it takes advantage of a "loophole" is to say that it would be illegal if they had made the regulations properly.

There is also the matter of whether or not _everything_ about those diffusers is actually legal, that is, if there is something about them that is unquestionably illegal.

I won't bother to check, mainly because I'm glad the regulations are shown for what they are... useless crap. Good on BGP, Williams, and Toyota for being able to get away with it.

I don't see anything wrong with them, they are all arranged in perfect rows. Next BMW needs to have a power bulge on their engine covers just like the M3.

I guess they are not in the spirit of the rules, but they are legal. So, the FIA will either change the rules to cover the loophole, or all the other teams better get working on new diffusers.

Since the senile dwarf has already plumped for Jenson this season, I'd think the FIA + stewards will be taking a more friendly approach to the diffusers. Bernie knows that Brawn GP helped keep his grid at 20 cars and even if he hasn't invested directly, he's still got a vested interest in them doing well.

It's in the interest of F1 that some teams other than McLaren, Ferrari & BMW get a sniff this year.

I'm guessing that the stewards and the FIA will be steering this season as much as they can to the small players advantage. At least until McLaren and Ferrari make enough of a stink about it. As with last season, we'll see steward decisions engineered towards an all decisive last race.

Personally I reckon if the diffusers are within the rules then fair enough. Can't blame (or punish) BGP, Williams & Toyota for FIA's incompetance in writing up their own rules. I think it would be more unfair to dock these teams points, places or grid spots for their clever thinking than to tell the other teams to smarten up.

But then again, what I think doesn't really matter. All depend what Bernie and Max tell the stewards to do in Australia.

All this confusion / scandal over rear diffusers is another factor that makes the first race of the new season one of the best. Every season when major changes to the tech regulations are introduced come race one there are always protests. The last one I remember is with the Minardi's being allowed to run the previous years rear wing.......i think.

 Maybe jane520linas was copy & pasting whilst reading this thread and accidently pasted his bibliograhpy in by mistake :eusa_think:

I cannot agree with Max about the first possibility. Why should the teams who inturpreted the rules to their advantage have that advantage taken away because their competitors failed to. Is this Formula One or Playschool????

I don't think the FIA and stewards are particularily friendly on race day - helpful, certainly - friendly, I've yet to see it.
