Winter Testing 2010 Season

Recommended Posts

Michael is using a all balck helmet today!! Possible that he is trialing new helmets for aero efficiency. Robert and Felipe have tried new helmets already this test.

maybe to extra safe ones following Massa accident last year?

Yes, I read somewhere that at least Massa was trying new helmet compounds.

There were contrasting outcomes for Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button as they debuted for their respective teams at Valencia on Wednesday as one was quickest and the other slowest.

With an interesting battle between Alonso, Button and Michael Schumacher on the cards, fans flocked to the Valencia circuit for the final day of this week's test.

And with his rivals pitting after their early installation laps, seven-time World Champion Schumacher had to the track to himself, staying out to complete the first lap time of the morning.

The Mercedes GP driver, who posted a best time of 1:12.947, clocked a 1:14.889 to get proceedings underway. Aside from testing Merc's W01 today, the German is also trying out a a black carbon prototype Schuberth helmet.

Schumacher was soon overhauled by Pedro de la Rosa as the Sauber driver went quickest with a 1:12.293. However, that's about all he did as moments later he brought out the first red flag of the day as his C29 came to a stop on the run in to Turn 4.

The session was stopped for 13 minutes while the marshals removed de la Rosa's car, returning it to the Sauber pits.

According to Autosport, Sauber's tech man Willy Rampf is reporting that it was a coming together between de la Rosa and Nick Hulkenberg that caused the problem and that de la Rosa's car is damaged.

With the track temperature rising to 18'C, Fernando Alonso ventured out to begin his Ferrari career. The Spaniard clocked a 1:16 on his first attempt and continued to shave that down until he managed to take the P1 slot with a 1:11.905, relegating de la Rosa to second.

An interesting point to note is that Alonso's 1:11.905 after just an hour in the F10 was only 0.183s off Felipe Massa's best time. And Massa had two full days in the car to achieve that.

Jaime Alguersuari, putting in his first laps in the STR5, was third quickest while Schumacher was fourth - 1.781s off the pace - after the first hour.

Vitaly Petrov and Hulkenberg were another two of Wednesday's debutants with the Renault driver fifth to Hulkenberg's sixth.

Meanwhile, Jenson Button, another driver starting a new era in his career, made his McLaren debut in the team's new MP4-25. The Brit, though, only did three laps in the first hour as he conducted system checks. He finished at the bottom of the timesheets.

Oh well, its only the third day of the season and we have had the first crash!!

How did they manage to hit eachother with only 7 cars on track???!!

That's correct, its a new prototype Schuberth.

The Hulk and Pedro had a slight coming together, minor bodywork damage. The young and the old clash already :P

I can't find a good reason about Button not matching or improving Hamilton's time when the track should be a little bit better than yesterday. Can be Hamilton so much ahead of Button? It might be some kind of problem with the car?

Conditions vary greatly according to the time of the day when they do the faster runs, and at what lap of the run they give it a try. Is it on new tires? Or is it with used ones? Is is early in the morning with less rubber but better temps? Or later when there's more rubber? Is he really pushing to the limit or he just has some fast laps, but the focus is on proper setups, etc, in which case he might be fast (all drivers want those) but can't do a "qualifying" lap. All his scheduled runs are with heavy fuel?

Again, the only marginally meaningful conclussions we can draw from testing times will not come until at least the third week of testing, IMHO.

I agree but comparing same car and two World Champions... I mean I think everybody improved yesterday's times. And Button had done only 14 laps while everyone else had doubled it.

Maybe Button's style is so different to Hamilton he could not run comfortably? I hope Button can talk about his first day openly.

Due to Brawn spitting his dummy out JB is seriously unfamiliar with the car. He only got to his new team four weeks ago and Lewis has been involved in every stage of the MP-25's development. 14 laps tells a story. It's not enough time - for anyone.

I'm sure Fernando's glad Felipe set the car up for him......! :P

So Ferrari clean up at Valencia. All 3 days at the top of the time sheets. Sauber should be pleased too, all 3 days in second place. Early front runners? Hmm.....

Next test at Jerez 10th-13th Feb. I think we'll see 3 more teams present for sure (Virgin, Force India and Red Bull) and possible Lotus too?

Still 7/10ths off Lewis in the same package. A story of two comprehensively different driving styles? It's not JB's car either - Rosberg was unusually slow on Day One driving Schumi's set up. The banzai merchants, [Massa, Alonso, Schumi, Lewis] won't be able to eat tyres like they have this week when racing begins in earnest. If I were Jens, I'd be more concerned about Ferarri's pace than anything else and if I were Peter Sauber, I'd throw the Viagra in the toilet. Kobi for WDC?

I would be very happy with that.

After the last winter it would be fantastic to se Sauber up there.

I think that last year was the best year to do a Brawn but for Sauber to be near the top after a winter like that, would be deserved after the way BMW screwed up their exit.

Last year Ferrari and Renault started quite well (at the top of the time sheets if I remember well) and things didn't work well in Australia. It's too early to say anything but it seems we'll have a few competitive teams, it won't be a one team/driver championship. But Alonso will win in the end of course. tongue.gif

I'd expect Button can pick whatever set up better suits him. It's too early to be worried but I don't think Button can be .7 s off the pace. He probably needs more testing than Hamilton at this stage but something went wrong today, whatever it was.

Kobi for WDC?

Very early to say.

Ferrari look well sorted, but I agree with Andres it's too early to draw any reliable conclusions. Only after the last test in February will everyone have found a decent setup, then we'll have an idea.

I would expect some kind of bad/good surprise for some teams/drivers/fans in Bahrain in respect to car performance.

Geez, you people are still reading too much into this.

All you can say being utterly objective is:

OMG ALONSO IS THE BEST HE BEAT SCHUMI AND LEWIS AND MASSA AND BUTTON AND YEAH HE DRIVES A FERRARI BUT I DONT CARE!!!

:P

Oh, and the Renaults look like a glimpse on Plato's "ideal" Formula 1 car

The Renault looks ugly, again. Too much unbroken yellow on the side pods - like a huge mole on someones face.

Button is supposed to be a demi god. He should not be 7/10ths behind Hamilton if he wants to pressure Lewis at all this year. If he really was the new messiah he should be half a second faster than that.

That other demi god, Alonso handled things ok, so why not Button?

Alonso himself provided the answer to that one:

Fernando, first day, first test, how did it go and what's the first impression of the car?

Fernando Alonso: It was okay. It was an important day for me, first time in a Ferrari. A very emotional day this morning and also last night. I think I maximised the day in terms of laps and time on the track and I feel good. [in] the car I have many things to adjust, the seat, the pedals, the steering wheel, the helmet, which is a new brand for me.

I've never run with Brembo brakes, so that was a first for me as well. Many things to adapt, many things to check, but I had a good base in the car thanks to Felipe's job during the first two days. I think it was a really, really big help for me because I didn't lose time with the set-up or the car. I just concentrated on my comfort in the car because Felipe's set-up was good enough to keep running in the morning.

Totally not worried about Jens being .7 off the pace. Its testing. They're trying different components, set ups. I'll worry on race day if it happens.

Sign of the times perhaps? The best way to win World Championship is to dump the constructor and endure a winter of uncertainty. That's the latest in double diffuser technology!

Alonso himself provided the answer to that one:

Ahhhhh...so he finally admits he can't set up a car, apart from adjust the seat and wing mirrors. Always knew he was a Nancy.

I'm happy to see Ferrari looking pretty competitive to be honest. Don't want to see a repeat of 2009....
