Persevere 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2010 In 1967 I remember purchasing 3 albums of lasting merit: Are You Experienced (Hendrix, of course), Fresh Cream (Cream, of course), and Procol Harum's self-titled debut. Thanks in no small part to monza gorilla, I've picked up some collections of P.H. including their first album. It can be dicey going back in time to some warm memory only to find how badly something - a book, a film, a song - now appears. Playing the CD yesterday for the first time was pure pleasure. Their music has held up remarkably well, a perfect artifact of it's period and yet still fresh. (I had forgotten how much vocalist and pianist Gary Brooker sounded like Stevie Winwood.) Lyrics? My word, could they toss off songs: Conquistador "Conquistador, your stallion stands In need of company And like some angel's brow You reek of purity I see your armor-plated breast Has long since lost its sheen And in your death-mask face There are no signs which can be seen... Salad Days "You come to be at midnight And say it's dark in here You know you've robbed me of my sight And night is what I fear I tell you that I cannot see But you persist in showing me Those bangles that I paid for long ago..." If you are rummaging around for something different check out their work and you will be amply rewarded.
BradSpeedMan 6 Report post Posted February 28, 2010 I'm sorry Bob Dylan is nothing on these guys: talking about the supreme lyricist, this is prolly my best Dylan song Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed Whatever colors you have in your mind I'll show them to you and you'll see them shine Stay, lady, stay, stay with your man awhile Until the break of day, let me see you make him smile His clothes are dirty but his hands are clean And you're the best thing that he's ever seen Stay, lady, stay, stay with your man awhile Why wait any longer for the world to begin You can have your cake and eat it too Why wait any longer for the one you love When he's standing in front of you Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed Stay, lady, stay, stay while the night is still ahead I long to see you in the morning light I long to reach for you in the night Stay, lady, stay, stay while the night is still ahead

Persevere 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2010 lovely lovely, wish I could look into you music collection I hope this isn't some urban slang-style euphemism that's going over my head, as so many things seem to do these days. I'll tell you, Brad, my collection is nothing if not eclectic. When I finally dug out my old vinyl version of Procol Harum it was wedged between Captain Beefheart and Bix Beiderbecke. Who says old people aren't adventurous.
Quiet One 15 Report post Posted March 1, 2010 "Enjoy the silence" by Depeche Mode. Just to show that good lyrics aren't a pre 80s privilege: Words like violence Break the silence Come crashing in Into my little world Painful to me Pierce right through me Can't you understand Oh my little girl All I ever wanted All I ever needed Is here in my arms Words are very unnecessary They can only do harm Vows are spoken To be broken Feelings are intense Words are trivial Pleasures remain So does the pain Words are meaningless And forgettable All I ever wanted All I ever needed Is here in my arms Words are very unnecessary They can only do harm Enjoy the silence
Autumnpuma 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2010 After much heavy-duty, steam-from-the-ears thought, I've come up with the best damned lyrics music has seen since 'Oh baby' and 'yeah'. Lick it up, lick it up, it's only right now Lick it up, lick it up, ooh yeah Lick it up, lick it up, come on, come on Lick it up, lick it up --KISS, from somewhere in my teens. Argento Reloaded 1 Report post Posted March 1, 2010 Some nice lyrics from Supertramp SCHOOL I can see you in the morning when you go to school Don't forget your books, you know you've got to learn the golden rule, Teacher tells you stop your play and get on with your work And be like Johnnie - too-good, well don't you know he never shirks - he's coming along! After School is over you're playing in the park Don't be out too late, don't let it get too dark They tell you not to hang around and learn what life's about And grow up just like them - won't you let it work it out - and you're full of doubt Don't do this and don't do that What are they trying to do?- Make a good boy of you Do they know where it's at? Don't criticize, they're old and wise Do as they tell you to Don't want the devil to Come out and put your eyes Maybe I'm mistaken expecting you to fight Or maybe I'm just crazy, I don't know wrong from right But while I am still living, I've just got this to say It's always up to you if you want to be that Want to see that Want to see that way - you're coming along! HIDE IN YOUR SHELL Hide in your shell cos the world is out to bleed you for a ride What will you gain, making your life a little longer? Heaven or Hell, was the journey cold that gave you eyes of steel? Shelter behind, painting your mind and playing joker Too frightening to listen to a stranger Too beautiful to put your pride in danger You're waiting for someone to understand you But you've got demons in your closet (You've got demons in your closet) And you're screaming out to stop it (And you're screaming out to stop it) Saying life's begun to cheat you Friends are out to beat you Grab on to what you can scramble for Don't let the tears linger on inside now Cos it's sure time you gained control If I can help you, if I can help you If I can help you, just let me know Well let me show you the nearest signpost To get your heart back and on the road If I can help you, if I can help you If I can help you, just let me know All through the night as you lie awake and hold yourself so tight What do you need, a second-hand-movie-star to tend you? I, as a boy, I believed the saying the cure for pain was love How would it be if you could see the world through my eyes? Too frightening, the fire's getting colder Too beautiful to think you're getting older You're looking for someone to give an answer But what you see is just illusion (What you see is just illusion) You're surrounded by confusion (You're surrounded by confusion) Saying, life's begun to cheat you Friends are out to beat you Grab on to what you can scramble for Don't let the tears linger on inside now Cos it's sure time you gained control If I can help you, if I can help you If I can help you, just let me know Well let me show you the nearest signpost To get your heart back and on the road If I can help you, if I can help you If I can help you, just let me know I wanna know, I wanna know, I wanna know, I've got to know I wanna know you, I wanna know you, well let me know you I wanna feel you, I wanna touch you, please let me near you, let me near you Can you hear what I'm saying? Well I'm hoping, I'm dreamin', I'm prayin' I know what you're thinkin' See what you're seein' Never ever let yourself go Hold yourself down, hold yourself down Why d'ya hold yourself down? Why don't you listen, you can trust me (So what, you're gonna take it to?) There's a place I know the way to (So what, you're gonna make it do?) A place there is need (So what's he gonna...) to feel you (So what's he gonna...) Feel that you're all alone (So what's he gonna do?) Oh won't you hear me (So what, you're gonna take it to?) I know exactly what you're feelin' (So what, you're gonna make it do?) Cos all your troubles are within you (So what's he gonna...) So begin to (So what's he gonna...) see that I'm just bleeding to (So what's he gonna do?) Love me, love you (So what, you're gonna take it to?) Loving is the way to help me, help you (So what, you're gonna make it do?) Why must we be so cool (So what's he gonna...), oh so cool? (So what's he gonna...) Oh, we're such damn fools (So what's he gonna do?) (So what, you're gonna take it to?) (So what, you're gonna make it do?) (So what's he gonna...) (So what's he gonna...) (So what's he gonna do?) Persevere 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2010 One more time for Mr. Dylan. From Highway 61 Revisited, this is a real favorite of mine: It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a train to Cry Well, I ride on a mail train, baby, Can't buy a thrill. Well, I've been up all night, baby, Leanin' on the window sill. Well, if I die On top of the hill And if I don't make it, You know my baby will. Don't the moon look good, mama, Shinin' in through the trees? Don't the brakeman look good, mama, Flagging down the "Double E"? Don't the sun look good Goin' down over the sea? Don't my gal look fine When she's comin' after me? Now the wintertime is coming, The windows are filled with frost. I went to tell everybody, But I could not get across. Well, I wanna be your lover, baby, I don't wanna be your boss. Don't say I never warned you When your train gets lost.
Kopite Girl 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2010 Now the wheel of fate has turned, I'm worried 'bout the new love you've discovered, He is a problem in my life, I have a problem on my mind. Stevie Wonder?? Anyhoo, Sarah McLaughlin - Silence. I love both the original, the Delerium and Tiesto mixes too. A very haunting melody. Love it. Give me. Release. Witness me. I am. Outside. Give me. Peace. Heaven holds a sense of wonder, And I wanted to believe that I get caught up, When the rage in me subsides. In this white rage, I am sinking, In this silence In this white rage You are sinking I believe. Passion choked the flower. Till she cried no more. Possessing all the beauty. Hungry still for more. Heaven holds a sense of wonder... I can't help this longing Comfort me I can't hold it all in If you wont let me. Heaven holds a sense of wonder... In this white wave I am sinking In this silence In this white wave I am sinking I believe.

Autumnpuma 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2010 Anyone remember this? Chose a life in circuses Jumped into the deepest end Pushing himself to all extremes Made it - people became his friend. Now they stood and noticed him Wanted to be part of it Pulled out some poor machinery So he worked 'til the pieces fit. The people were intrigued His wife held back her fears The headlines gave acclaim He'd realized their dreams. Faster than a bullet from a gun He is faster than everyone Quicker than the blinking of an eye Like a flash you could miss him going by No one knows quite how he does it but it's true they say He's the master of going faster. Now he moved into the space That the special people share Right on the edge of do or die Where there is nothing left to spare. Still the crowds came pouring in Some had hoped to see him fail Filling their hearts with jealousies Crazy people with love so frail. No need to wonder why His wife held back her fears So few have even tried To realize their dreams.

Quiet One 15 Report post Posted March 9, 2010 One - U2 Is it getting better? Or do you feel the same? Will it make it easier on you now? You got someone to blame You say One love One life When it's one need In the night One love We get to share it Leaves you baby if you Don't care for it Did I disappoint you? Or leave a bad taste in your mouth? You act like you never had love And you want me to go without Well it's Too late Tonight To drag the past out into the light We're one, but we're not the same We get to Carry each other Carry each other One Have you come here for forgiveness? Have you come to raise the dead? Have you come here to play Jesus? To the lepers in your head Did I ask too much? More than a lot. You gave me nothing, Now it's all I got We're one But we're not the same Well we Hurt each other Then we do it again You say Love is a temple Love a higher law Love is a temple Love the higher law You ask me to enter But then you make me crawl And I can't be holding on To what you got When all you got is hurt One love One blood One life You got to do what you should One life With each other Sisters Brothers One life But we're not the same We get to Carry each other Carry each other One
Kopite Girl 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2010 Song by Dirt Poor Robins - I was just listening to it.. You are the light in my darkness Yu're the current that pushes me back to the shore You are the light in my darkness You open a window when they close the door You are the light in my darkness You're the wind that keep pushing me up towards the sky You are the light in my darkness You keep me from wandering blind through the night You're the light, You're the light
pabloh20 1 Report post Posted March 18, 2010 Ok, maybe not the greatest lyrics ever, but always makes me laugh. Has to be sung in an 'oirish' accent though! Dear Sir I write this note to you to tell you of my plight For at the time of writing I am not a pretty sight My body is all black and blue, my face a deathly grey And I write this note to say why Paddy's not at work today. Whilst working on the fourteenth floor, some bricks I had to clear To throw them down from such a height was not a good idea The foreman wasn't very pleased, the bloody awkward sod He said I had to cart them down the ladders in my hod. Now clearing all these bricks by hand, it was so very slow So I hoisted up a barrel and secured the rope below But in my haste to do the job, I was too blind to see That a barrel full of building bricks was heavier than me. And so when I untied the rope, the barrel fell like lead And clinging tightly to the rope I started up instead I shot up like a rocket till to my dismay I found That half way up I met the bloody barrel coming down. Well the barrel broke my shoulder, as to the ground it sped And when I reached the top I banged the pulley with my head I clung on tightly, numb with shock, from this almighty blow And the barrel spilled out half the bricks, fourteen floors below. Now when these bricks had fallen from the barrel to the floor I then outweighed the barrel and so started down once more Still clinging tightly to the rope, my body racked with pain When half way down, I met the bloody barrel once again. The force of this collision, half way up the office block Caused multiple abrasions and a nasty state of shock Still clinging tightly to the rope I fell towards the ground And I landed on the broken bricks the barrel scattered round. I lay there groaning on the ground I thought I'd passed the worst But the barrel hit the pulley wheel, and then the bottom burst A shower of bricks rained down on me, I hadn't got a hope As I lay there bleeding on the ground, I let go the bloody rope. The barrel then being heavier then started down once more And landed right across me as I lay upon the floor It broke three ribs, and my left arm, and I can only say That I hope you'll understand why Paddy's not at work today. Argento Reloaded 1 Report post Posted March 18, 2010 An all time classic.. Outside the rain begins and it may never end So cry no more on the shore A dream will take us out to sea Forever more forever more Close your eyes and dream And and you can be with me 'Neath the waves through the caves of hours Long forgotten now We're all alone We're all alone Close the window Calm the light And it will be alright No need to bother now Let it out Let it all begin Learn how to pretend Once a story's told It can't help but grow old Roses do Lovers too So cast your seasons to the wind And hold me dear Oh, hold me dear Close the window Calm the light And it will be alright No need to bother now Let it out Let it all begin All's forgotten now We're all alone oh-oh, we're all alone Close the window Calm the light And it will be alright No need to bother now Let it out Let it all begin Owe it to the wind, my love

Kopite Girl 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2010 Richard Ashcroft - On A Beach (I totally dig this song...) I have swum those raging seas. Washed up by an ocean who had tired of me. How I survive I will never know. This wreck's got a home and a whole lot of hope. I'm out on a beach, sat on a rock, Thinking of you and the love I've got. I saw the devil's servant. I sent her home. I said, "Bring me your master. I don't want his dog." I'm on fire. I'm full of a new desire. I'm full of love and new desire. I lit my fire; blew my conch. Nobody comes. I built my boat from bamboo, but it sunk. I looked at the sky for vapour trails. Nobody comes. I wrote your name on a tree along with the days this has taken you away from me. I'm out on a beach, eating my heart, Thinking of you and the love I got. I saw the devil's servant. I sent her home. I said, "Bring me your master. I don't want his dog." But, I'm on fire. I'm full of a new desire. I need somebody like you, a warm body. I ain't afraid to die. There you go, "Ain't afraid to die." I'm out on a beach, eating my heart, Thinking of you and the love I got. I saw the devil's serpent. I sent him home. I said, "Bring me your master. I don't want his dog." I'm out on a beach, sat on a rock, Thinking of you and the love I got. I saw the devil's servant. I sent her home. I said, "Bring me your master. I don't want his dog." I need somebody like you.
