Kopite Girl

The Greatest Ever Song Lyrics

Recommended Posts

MGMT. Must be heard to feel the sheer force and cynicism of this song.

This is a quick peek on what burns inside me every single day.

(I can get nastier :D)

I'm feeling rough, I'm feeling raw, I'm in the prime of my life.

Let's make some music, make some money, find some models for wives.

I'll move to Paris, shoot some heroin, and **** with the stars.

You man the island and the cocaine and the elegant cars.

This is our decision, to live fast and die young.

We've got the vision, now let's have some fun.

Yeah, it's overwhelming, but what else can we do.

Get jobs in offices, and wake up for the morning commute.

Forget about our mothers and our friends

We're fated to pretend

To pretend

We're fated to pretend

To pretend

I'll miss the playgrounds and the animals and digging up worms

I'll miss the comfort of my mother and the weight of the world

I'll miss my sister, miss my father, miss my dog and my home

Yeah, I'll miss the boredem and the freedom and the time spent alone.

But there's really nothing, nothing we can do

Love must be forgotten, life can always start up anew.

The models will have children, we'll get a divorce

We'll find some more models, everyting must run it's course.

We'll choke on our vomit and that will be the end

We were fated to pretend

To pretend

We're fated to pretend

To pretend

Yeah, yeah, yeah

My son is an officer in the British Army. He cut his teeth on conflict when he was posted to Macedonia as part of the NATO ceasefire monitoring force in 2001. He went from there directly to Afghanistan and subsequently to Iraq. He is currently posted to the NATO/ISAF HQ staff but he's done his share 'in country' too, over the years.

Basically, he's a killing machine with a brain. He's never complained about or opined on where he stands in any of the operations he's been involved in. He's not married and when he does get home, he's always glad to see us but generally buggers off after a couple of days to go skiing, snowboarding, surfing or to pursue some other, equally adrenalin-pumping challenge. Last year, he and a few other pals who are trained in mountain warfare tried to climb K2 to raise money for Afghani children who have been injured by mines and EADs. They turned back once because of bad weather and then got a call to return to Kabul.

He's alway jolly on the outside but I have no idea what goes on inside his head. He never talks about his work. I guess if he wanted to, he would. Maybe if he did, he’d crack - I don’t know. He lost his only 'serious' girlfriend last year - she just couldn't handle the mental anguish she suffered every time he went back into theatre. I find it enormously hard too. Who wouldn’t? I've been writing songs for more than forty-five years but I've always struggled to write one about Ryan. I've only ever got as far as a couple of verses and a chorus:

The Streets Of Heaven

Lying here/In the cold night air

Staring at the desert sky

I can see the flare/It seems quite near

And my heart begins to fly

So, I take my mind/Back through time

To see your smiling eyes

And remember the words/ You said back then

“We should never say goodbye”

I won’t ever say “Goodbye”

I can smell my own fear/As I check my gear

Waiting for the call

So I close my eyes/And think of you

As star shell begins to fall

I don’t know why/They sent us here

So many miles from home

But I’ll do my duty/For Queen and country

In a land we’ll never own

Chorus

Politicians will have us in tangles

Spin doctors will polish the angles

But the Streets Of Heaven will be filled

With heroes tonight

Yes, the Streets Of Heaven will be filled

With heroes tonight

EDIT: Spacing was off wack

Sean. Thats amazing. Genuinely amazing.

For what its worth, Ryan is a survivor. He has what it takes. I have the utmost respect for him. My dad and brother were armed forces. My dad served in the Falklands, my brother in Kuwait/Iraq. Both men as well as your son true heroes.

Please pass on my thanks to Ryan. He keeps us safe at night and keeps our freedom intact.

Bernard Cribbins: Right Said Fred

Right said Fred, both of us together, one each end and steady as we go

Tried to to shift it, couldn't even lift it, we was getting nowhere

And so, we, had a cup of tea

Right said Fred, give a shout to Charlie, up comes Charlie from the floor below

After straining, heaving and complaining, we was getting nowhere

And so, we, had a cup of tea

Charlie had a think and he thought we ought, to take off all the handles

And the things that hold the candles, but it did no good, well I never thought it would

Right said Fred, have to take the feet off, to get them feet off wouldn't take a mo

Took itís feet off, even with the seat off, should got us somewhere but no

So Fred said lets have another cup of tea and we said right-o

Right said Fred, have to take the door off, need more space to shift the so and so

Had bad twinges taking off the hinges, and it got us nowhere

And so, we, had a cup of tea

Right said Fred, have to take the wall down, that there wall is gonna have to go

Took the wall down, even with it all down, we was getting nowhere

And so, we, had a cup of tea

Charlie had a think and and he said look Fred, I've got a sort of feeling

If we remove the ceiling, with a rope or two we can drop the blighter though

Right said Fred, climbing up a ladder, with his crowbar gave a mighty blow

Was he in trouble, half a ton of rubble, landed on the top of his dome

So Charlie and me had another cup of tea and then we went home

I'll said to Charlie we'll just have to leave it standing on the landing that's all

You see the trouble with Fred is he's too hasty

Now you never get nowhere if you're too hasty.

;)

The re-mastered edition of Exile on Main St. was recently issued and, 38 years later, this is still one of the masterful albums in rock. It also clearly stamps the end of the 1960's as well as any album did. (And the Stones themselves are often cited as finishing off what little euphoria was still left by 1969 at Altamont in December.) No more optimism, no more thoughts of successfully changing the status quo. People retreated into smaller groups; people lost themselves in drugs and booze and... oh yeah, lots of sex.

The opening track of the album seems to sum this up well. I can't guarantee the accuracy of the lyrics but this is close if not 100% right.

Rocks Off

(Jagger-Richards ~ 1972)

I hear you talking when I'm on the street,

Your mouth don't move but I can hear you speak.

What's the matter with the boy?

He don't come around no more,

Is he checking out for sure?

Is he gonna’ close the door on me?

And I'm always hearing voices on the street,

I want to shout, but I can hardly speak.

I was making love last night

To a dancer friend of mine.

I can't seem to stay in step,

'Cause she comes every time that she pirouettes over me.

And I only get my rocks off while I'm dreaming,

I only get my rocks off while I'm sleeping.

I'm zipping through the days at lightning speed.

Plug in, flush out and fire the ****ing feed.

Heading for the overload,

Splattered on the dusty road,

Kick me like you've kicked before,

I can't even feel the pain no more.

But I only get my rocks off while I'm dreaming,

I only get my rocks off while I'm sleeping.

Feel so hypnotized, can't describe the scene.

Feel so mesmerized all that inside me.

The sunshine bores the daylights out of me.

Chasing shadows moonlight mystery.

Headed for the overload,

Splattered on the dirty road,

Kick me like you've kicked before,

I can't even feel the pain no more.

But I only get my rocks off while I'm dreaming,

I only get my rocks off while I'm sleeping.

What would be good (at least for me) is to actually read some of the poetry (lyrically speaking) you talk about. I think it would provide an answer into the insight of what you like to hear, if you don't mind??

Read any good poet, that's hardly my point though. Real meaningful lyrics would make sense written, without the music, without knowing what the song sounds like, if you look at most of the great lyrics posted here, if you never heard the song, they read like stuttering repetitive random words and phrases stuck together. Lyrics are overrated.

I understand what you're saying. The question is, Like Steph ask, what do you define real poetry, because most of these songs in text resemble evocative and aesthetic qualities to most of us.

What they evoke has nothing to do with the words, which most people can hardly make out, far less make sense of.

Thanks Cav.

I can see your point. If you don't know the song nor feel the emotion from the music, then lyrics will be a bit like reading an encrypted poem. But while typing them yourself, to a song you do know, you remember how that song sounds. You feel the raw emotion that touched your very soul.

But I understand your views and does seem logical to me.

Not a song, not properly a lyric, not even a poem. But it is beautiful, simple, and true.

From "The Little Prince" of course:

"My life is very monotonous," the fox said. "I hunt chickens; men hunt me. All the chickens are just alike, and all the men are just alike. And, in consequence, I am a little bored. But if you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life. I shall know the sound of a step that will be different from all the others. Other steps send me hurrying back underneath the ground. Yours will call me, like music, out of my burrow. And then look: you see the grain-fields down yonder? I do not eat bread. Wheat is of no use to me. The wheat fields have nothing to say to me. And that is sad. But you have hair that is the color of gold. Think how wonderful that will be when you have tamed me! The grain, which is also golden, will bring me back the thought of you. And I shall love to listen to the wind in the wheat . . ."

The fox gazed at the little prince, for a long time.

"Please--tame me!" he said.

[...]

So the little prince tamed the fox. And when the hour of his departure drew near--

"Ah," said the fox, "I shall cry."

"It is your own fault," said the little prince. "I never wished you any sort of harm; but you wanted me to tame you . . ."

"Yes, that is so," said the fox.

"But now you are going to cry!" said the little prince.

"Yes, that is so," said the fox.

"Then it has done you no good at all!"

"It has done me good," said the fox, "because of the color of the wheat fields."

I know

Something about opening windows and doors

I know

How to move quietly to creep across creaky wooden floors

I know

Where to find precious things in all your cupboards and drawers

Slipping the clippers

Slipping the clippers through the telephone wires

The sense of isolation

Inspires

Inspires me

I like

To feel the suspense when I'm certain you know I am there

I like

You lying awake, your bated breath charging the air

I like

The touch and the smell of all the pretty dresses you wear

Intruder's happy in the dark!!

Intruder come

Intruder come and he leave his mark, leave his mark

That song used to chill my blood when I was young. Gabriel at his best. Primus' cover of the song is good as well.

Oh, how delicious. I have now pulled out my entire, infuriatingly titled collection with particular emphasis being put on 'No Self Control', which reminds you of just how distinctive Mr Collins sets up his tom toms (being instantly recognisable), and how wonderful it must have been to have Ms Bush on board.

Jeux sans frontiers, anyone?

Oh hell, that's got me started.......

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOwyRd9PPBk

I know we're in a lyrics thread, but the hell, we're all fans of great music here, aren't we? What makes this tune for me, apart from Kate's vocal dexterity, is the drone like nature of the root chord, which never changes, balanced with the gorgeous chord progression throughout and the power of the drums. I love songs that do this.

Here's another example;

The drone. It has a tribal quality that taps into all of us. For me, it's at the very core of where music must have come from. Sticking to one theme, then going off and playing with it.

Okay, this is just pure indulgence now. I don't expect any of you to come with me on this one (well, apart from one or two...you know who you are). This is a particularly good quality link of a beautiful song from the mind of Anthony Banks.......... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2BkF073sX0

Fifty thousand men were sent to do the will of one.

His claim was phrased quite simply, though he never voiced it loud,

I am he, the chosen one.

In his name they could slaughter, for his name they could die.

Though many there were believed in him, still more were sure he lied,

But they'll fight the battle on.

Then one whose faith had died

Fled back up the mountainside,

But before the top was made,

A misplaced footfall made him stray

From the path prepared for him.

Off of the mountain,

On to a wilderness of ice.

This unexpected vision made him stand and shake with fear,

But nothing was his fright compared with those who saw him appear.

Terror filled their minds with awe.

Simple were the folk who lived

Upon this frozen wave.

So not surprising was their thought,

This is he, God's chosen one,

Who's come to save us from

All our oppressors.

We shall be kings on this world.

Follow me!

I'll play the game you want me,

Until I find a way back home.

Follow me!

I give you strength inside you,

Courage to win your battles -

No, no, no, this can't go on,

This will be all that I fled from.

Let me rest for a while.

He walked into a valley,

All alone.

There he talked with water, and then with the vine.

They leave me no choice.

I must lead them to glory or most likely to death.

They traveled cross the plateau of ice, up to its edge.

Then they crossed a mountain range and saw the final plain.

Still he urged the people on.

Then, on a distant slope,

He observed one without hope

Flee back up the mountainside.

He thought he recognised him by his walk,

And by the way he fell,

And by the way he

Stood up, and vanished into air.

Somebody stop me......

....ooh, it's quiet in here. No one but me and Mr Merlot; I'll continue then.....

Lots of diminished and seventh chords here. God bless Mr Grohl. Lyrics? Ha! So simple....

He floats

Floats away

On the ground

He comes back down

She floats

Floats away

On the ground

She comes back down

They float

Float away

On the ground

They come back down

We float

Float away

On the ground

We come back down

That's not as big as

What's flown around here

Almost too beautiful....

Don’t you have a word to show what may be done

Have you never heard a way to find the sun

Tell me all that you may know

Show me what you have to show

Won’t you come and say

If you know the way to blue

Have you seen the land living by the breeze

Can you understand a light among the trees

Tell me all that you may know

Show me what you have to show

Tell us all today

If you know the way to blue?

Look through time and find your rhyme

Tell us what you find

We will wait

At your gate

Hoping like the blind

Can you now recall all that you have known

Will you never fall

When the light has flown

Tell me all that you may know

Show me what you have to show

Won’t you come and say

If you know the way to blue?

Okay, we have gone state side, west coast, all of a sudden. I bet not many of you know this little peachette;

I want to get my man flaps around that fuzz guitar in the solo at the end. Woo-ha!
