On first appearance, I'd say Massa isn't driving to his usual standard this season. It could be for a few different reasons: his accident, becoming a family man, the car doesn't suit him as well, and most likely in my opinion is that Alonso is willing (unlike Raikkonen) to do everything possible off the track to gain an advantage. He has probably galvanised the team around him already and Massa has, perhaps, let his chin drop.

In any event I wouldn't write Felipe off yet, I still think when he's on form he can be a devastating no.2 (although his problem is he's too good to be a no.2 and not good enough to be a no.1).

As for replacing him? A number of imperfect options are available from a Ferrari perspective:

Kubica (direct swap?) - far too good to be Alonso's no.2, and it remains to be seen whether having two ultra competitive guys fighting to be no.1 in the same team can ever really work. It would certainly kill Alonso's title chances with RK taking points off him, so I can't see it being a good decision in that regard.

Webber - yes, he has recently been exceptional (note: when his contract is being negotiated he suddenly starts performing - always interesting), but 2 races don't nullify his inconsistent patches throughout his season. Replacing Massa for a Webber seems like a pointless exercise. However, I'll revise that opinion if Webber surprises me and keeps up his performance this season, if he did that, then he'd be a great no.2 at Ferrari.

Raikkonen - would be great but isn't interested in serving under Alonso, and again, might pose the same problems as Kubica if he started driving properly.

Rosberg (direct swap with Massa) - looks fast this season but that might be because Schumi isn't all that great anymore. Still an unproven driver, probably not as good as an on form Massa.

None of the options are too great imo, but it depends what Ferrari want. If they want a reliable no.2 for Alonso they should look at Webber, and perhaps Rosberg if the contract can be worked out. If they want a driver who is better than Massa all round, Kubica is the only realistic option (Raikks would be nice, but he needs a team working for him to be motivated and performing).

The perfect option imo for Ferrari would be a fast, media friendly driver, who could challenge Alonso regularly but not beat him too much as to hurt his title chances, a driver who didn't mind having a fast team mate which the team was wrapped around; sadly Jenson is already taken.

..and from a fan perspective? I'd love to have Kubica in a Ferrari, the guy is a much more natural racer than Massa and makes fewer mistakes than a lot of drivers, and seemingly without sacrificing any of his raw pace. Renault will want to hold onto him for good reason I imagine, and going against Alonso in the same team is no joke, so we'll see if anything comes of it.

Yeah very true but that makes me wonder why the same didn't happen when Schumi was the number one at Ferrari. Perhaps Felipe's expectations are now different - or perhaps it's something else.

I think Jenson would be the same as Massa and as you say there aren't any easy options for Ferrari. Massa isn't that bad that he really needs to be replaced yet imho, depending on what philosophy Ferrari want to have about driver lineups, and on whether this is just a temporary dip in form.

Since I did so well here, I'll have another go.

Bearing in mind we're only 6 races into the season...

2011:

If Webber finishes the WDC in 4th or below...

Ferrari => Alonso + Rosberg

McLaren => Hamilton + Button

Merc => Schumi + Webber

Red Bull => Vettel + Kubica

Renault => Massa + Petrov

If Webber finishes 1st or 2nd in WDC...

Ferrari => Alonso + Rosberg

McLaren => Hamilton + Button

Merc => Schumi + Kubica

Red Bull => Vettel + Webber

Renault => Massa + Petrov

Renault might not be called Renault by 2011 either.

Why Massa perform well with Schumi and Kimi. I think the character of Schumi and Kimi and the ferrari as a whole at that time was very non-latino; There was no internal politics and double agendas on the team. Now with Alonso and all the italian guys on charge the way the team behaves have changed a lot. Alonso polarizes the team around him and uses all the resourses to his gain. Massa cannot take advantage of this situation because he hasn't been WDC like Alonso. Massa is very sad because he is not the favorite driver of the team even if he has been around for 8 years. Alonso in a few months became the favorite driver of the team and also for the tifosi.

Ferrari need a 2nd driver who can perform very well on track and doesn't care for the internal politics or the tifosi or anything a driver with a low profile who doesn't compete for the attention with Alonso. I think Kubica and Rosberg are good fits.

Armil, your post is good. But I think change came at Ferrari when the Schumacher camp left, inc Brawn etc. Domenicali runs a very different ship.

Was interesting actually when watching the Monaco GP. Ant Davidson was commentating and the Massa/Alonso question came up. Ant made a very valid point that Alonso can be a great headworker. I just think Alonso is on guard since Lewis, and attacks first before he's attacked. Massa could be a great driver as anybody could in a Ferrari, if he strengthened his mind.

I don't think Massa's driving as well as he has done in the past, but that could be due to two major things. He's now a father, and that really affects some drivers, as they become more aware of their own mortality. It's happen a lot through the years when the driver becomes a father, they don't drive on the ragged edge any more. The second thing...oh yeah, it was only last year when he had a great big suspension spring slam into his head!!!! These have huge repercussions on his speed, so yeah he is a bit sucky this season but not for good reason and that doesn't mean he's always been a poor driver.

I don't think Massa is an incredible driver but he has got good results in the past couple of years and has done well with his Ferrari drive. He was exactly what Ferrari needed when Schuey was there, and he kept Kimi honest in 2007 and almost won the title 2008 and had a lot more points than Kimi up to his awful accident. So if you think Massa sucks you'd have to say Kimi sucks.

I think Kubica seems the most likely to take Massa's place. Kubica seems super quick so will be nice to see him in the best car to see what he can actually do.

If being a father is the cause of his sucking, then retire and be a father.

If being hit in the head by the (then) untouchable BrawnGP's is a problem, then retire and enjoy your undeserved riches.

So because Kimi won the title one year that means Massa is clearly much much suckier even though he beat Kimi the year after and also scored more points than him up to his accident last year. If Massa is as crap as you say then Kimi should have wiped the floor with him all three years.

That Kimi is a WDC and Massa is not matters, sorry tiny sista.

Kimi was fcked over his 2nd year in favor of Massa. It showed time and again during quali. The car was not made for Kimi and Ferrari paid a huge price for that, namely, they lost the WDC for backing worthless Massa.

Add to that the "motions" to push Kimi aside (insane, I know) in order to bring Alonso on and, well, you know Kimi. Almost the last entire seemed a "fck you" from Kimi to the team, and deservedly so. Still, Massa was behind Kimi and nowhere.

Keeping Massa on and getting rid off the best driver in F1, K-i-m-i, to bring on Alonso was an idiotic move on Ferrari's part. Kimi and Alonso would've kept Ferrari winning for years to come.

And by your own reckoning that means Michael Schumacher who has 7 WDC is the THE best driver ever and everyone is totally sucky in comparison! :D

If you are gonna play, do not misconstrue what I say in such an infantile way. It's endearing but no more.

I'll indulge you this time, but smart up and try harder in the future. So... that Schumacher won 7 WDC m-a-t-t-e-r-s, get it? It _does_ fcking matter. And, yeah, when one speaks of Schumacher and his teammates, the 7 WDC's implies they sucked compared to him. Another matter is whether or not these suckers suck in a general suckily sucking suck kind of way. But that's another topic... and you are not ready for that yet.

Behave or else.

Is it possible that the car suits Alonso more than Massa?

It's very possible. However, one must keep in mind that driver adaptability is also a factor, iow, it might not be that the car suits Alonso but that Alonso makes himself suit the car.

There are many examples of drivers that are and aren't flexible in this respect.

The way the shorter wheelbase suited Nicolette more than Schuey?

One gets to thinking that the whole business is just an urban legend, you know? Schumacher is not up to par no matter how much it might hurt to some to admit it to themselves.

But let's not forget that, at least (if not more), the last two of Schumacher's WDC were won under dubious conditions. That's right, boys and girls, FIA's script.

Whatever the reasons, hope Massa ups his game soon. He's traditionally done very well at Turkey. If he's sure that Ferrari don't want him, might as well go all hyper-aggressive on Alonso, go wheel to wheel & not yield even if it means taking out both of 'em. If he does that, Alonso is likely to yield as he's got everything to lose.

Yep. Massa is a rather maladroit and unadaptable driver. Turkey has worked for him in the past because of whatever. And you are right when you say he is hyper-aggressive... but to take out Alonso? They would not like that at Ferrari.

I expect Alonso to add points and worry more about the RBR's. Massa is fcked and the only worse thing for him is not to realize that. So, may the win be his and may the forum come alight with insane shouts of the lynching of Alonso.

All fun. No matter which way it turns.

Both Alonso and Massa will be under loads of pressure and more. It'll be a nice race watching from that point of view.

A driver for Ferrari next year... Yes, I think it should be Kubica but if I were him I would like to know whether Michelin is back as tyre supplier for 2011 or not. I think I would stay at Renault one more year if Michelin is back.

Can't say about the pressure... Alonso's got a 3 or 4 year contract and is the best racer left in the field. Massa, well, that's another tale.

But you do bring a good point about the tyres. There is much backroom and c#ck sucking going on nowadays to figure this one out. Let's see who's best as Ecclestone's viagra.

On first appearance, I'd say Massa isn't driving to his usual standard this season. I liked your post.

I wonder what would happen if you were to eliminate worries regarding teammates alledged inability to collaborate as well as compete. Sure, it is true that we have very sorry examples on record... both Schumacher and Hamilton leading the parade. But, personally, I think the behavior of these morons is not rule of law.

In fact, Alonso was and remains friends with most of his old teammates and he is a very positive force in the field and among most drivers. Kubica, Webber, etc, would not need to be 2nd to him necessarily and a fruitful collaboration could very well take place. So, I remain optimistic until shown otherwise... and do yourself (whoever-the-fck-you-might-dare-be) and don't bring up McLaren or I might yawn and swallow you whole.

Hey, Mario. Massa's sadness is out of place. He's got the drive many dream of.

Also, Massa is Brazilian, that is, latino, as are French, Italians, and many others.

And, yes, Alonso is better than Massa in everything but sucking. Getting the team going is one of those things Alonso does very well and the team that doesn't take full advantage of it (hear me Renault and McLaren) is doomed to fail catastrophically.

I back Kubica but you are right. Rosberg would be a nice touch.

Thanks Maure, I laughed out loud at this.

It seems we both have a thing for language...

Wow, Maure! an entire topic just to stick it to Cav! Brilliant. We all just KNEW he couldn't stay away...

Anyway, at this point Kubica is best off where he is. Also, I always thought he and Alonso would have been the best teammates. Now I'm not so sure. I think Kubica needs to try to do exactly the same thing as Alonso did at Renault. THEN maybe move to Ferrari. No WAY he should be a part of the Schumicheataher and Papa Brawn cabal (poor Nico!). Let those two go down into the cesspool they both created. What I would LOVE to see is Nick Heidfeld (can't believe I'm saying this) and Nico at Mercedes. I think Nick would get more out of that car than the geriatric ward. WITHOUT rebuilding the whole thing.

Also I'm Mexican so I'm a Latino too. I know the mentality of Latinos. Latinos can be very supportive and very destructive between them. Alonso is very strong mentally and Massa no so strong thats why I think Massa is disappointed of the team

Ahhh, Mexico, good memories... I remember, for instance, decades back spending several nights fully engaged in a peyote/maria/tequila combo dreamlike state while lost in a desert named something related to the moon, a place where the locals claimed clocks didn't work and cars broke down for no reason... somewhere in the North of Mexico... can't say right now. Fck, I've just remembered that the five of us saw a freaking UFO... damn, it's still very, very funny.

Gotta call some friends and have yet another laugh over this.

Aww you think of me as family (!) that's so nice! mf_tongue.gif And obviously you're trying to put me down with your condescending "tiny" but I'm a girl!!! Tiny is one of THE best compliments, so thank you! Does my bum look good in this? No because Maure says I'm tiny. waccoe1.gif

Kimi was fcked over his 2nd year in favor of Massa. It showed time and again during quali. The car was not made for Kimi and Ferrari paid a huge price for that, namely, they lost the WDC for backing worthless Massa.

To quote you: "However, one must keep in mind that driver adaptability is also a factor, iow, it might not be that the car suits Alonso but that Alonso makes himself suit the car."

Exactly, Kimi should have adapted to the car, like Massa adapted to the car. biggrin.gif

Kimi had a good start to the season winning two races, so the car can't have been that undrivable for him personally. The car was capable of winning, so any good driver should be able to get good results, Kimi didn't, Massa did. (In fact from Monaco onwards is when I totally fell out of love with him, I never saw his "ragged edge" raw speed again apart from Spa when he got me all excited only to later crash out.)

I have great respect for all F1 drivers, I might laugh and joke about some, but they are awesome. And for Massa to come second, beating all the others but one, he did well.

Add to that the "motions" to push Kimi aside (insane, I know) in order to bring Alonso on and, well, you know Kimi. Almost the last entire seemed a "fck you" from Kimi to the team, and deservedly so. Still, Massa was behind Kimi and nowhere.

Now you either don't know how to count or you are talking about the back end of the season when Massa had a huge piece of suspension spring rammed into his head so no longer could drive. If you are talking about the latter, then shame on you that you can only consolidate Kimi's woeful driving as being able to beat someone who is not racing.

For your records the points up to Massa's crash was: Kimi: 10 Points Massa: 22 Points

If you are gonna play, do not misconstrue what I say in such an infantile way. It's endearing but no more.

Yeah...that is not going to happen. Everything I write in here will be for fun, for laughs and for pure playful value and in the most infantile way possible. Besides, you love it really :P

BTW if you didn't contradict yourself it would be impossible to misconstrue your posts.

You really like the word suck don't you? ermm.gif

Behave or else.

Now if you knew anything about me, you'd know that I'd take that as a dare...although you write "Behave or else" I hear "don't behave because I have a surprise for you"...

...ooh goodie I love surprises! I'll misbehave at every opportunity!!!

i dont think alonso is very strong in his head at all - he lost it at renault when winning by a mile from MS and started babbling paranoid stuff about how the team were not supporting him... all because his rubbish italian team mate starting outqualifying him! He then totally lost it at his next team, mcclaren after his 'dream move'...i remember some pretty rash and desperate moves from alonso, not least when he ended up getting shoved off the track by massa at barcelona after yet another optimistic attempt to overtake by nando...so of all the drivers, i would say that alonso has a proven tendency to lose it...lets see how he reacts to the italian media if he makes any more embarassing rookie mistakes....
