Ban Maure

Recommended Posts

Dear George,

Hope this post finds you well. I am going to have to disagree with you this Christmas. Maure's posts in this thread seem to fall into a grey area between spam and just winding people up - a longstanding tradition amongst some of the less mature posters here. But worse, freedom of speech will always be abused by moderators, in my opinion. When you've been around as long as I have, young man, you too will remember many threads being closed as soon as they get offensive to some people, or heated, or controversial, or threatening to cherished beliefs, or otherwise counterproductive in some people's estimation - who go on to presume that theirs is the only estimation that could be correct and so impose it on the rest of us. While that's one valid course of action to take, it's one that certainly does impinge on the "right" to free speech. Note also that the moderators we've heretofore had here are excellent and thoroughly decent fellows - in stark contrast to what I've seen on other forums.

Grandpa.

PS Hope you like your new socks.

PPS Don't wear them until Christmas day.

Nobody wants an overly-moderated, dull forum where the controversial or even mildly offensive is immediately deleted (and people's freedom of speech could be impinged upon by what one mod considers a bad post). Yet it's also true that personal arguments on this forum sometimes let the place down and the quality of threads and posts plummet, and everybody complains; hence the moderation drive (although the tune seems to have changed now). If people are happy to take the rough with the smooth then all that is fine.

But to me it's entirely possible to keep the charm (?) of this place and have some moderation. A forum which is warm, unusual, has the occasional controversial post, is full of banter etc, and a moderated forum, are not mutually exclusive things. It is possible to have both, as long as that moderation is good and kept to an absolute minimum (like Puma said). If the choice was genuinely between 'the forum stays like it is now (warts 'n all)' OR 'we have mods and then threads get closed and nobody can post anything controversial, and nobody can hold a strong opinion etc' then I would obviously opt for the former. Of course, I think that choice is completely false, although I accept it is a difficult balance to strike between having a well moderated forum (where there is a bit of banter, controversy is acceptable, etc), and having an overly-moderated, dull forum (like so many are).

It will certainly be a shame if the situation you remember comes about again (and I can imagine the kind of issues where it would..). But, as you know I don't really have experience of this forum when it's been moderated (so maybe my argument is idealistic); but I do think the forum could have moderation and retain its character.

To use the old pub analogy, a heated discussion at the bar with strong or controversial opinions is fine, but if someone started hurling racist/sexist/insert favourite 'ist' abuse or making offensive personal statements, which everybody could hear, then somebody would probably have a word with them and if they continued, they'd probably get kicked out. I don't see why the internet should be any different.

Oh and thank you for the socks, although you ruined the surprise now.

Edit: what is this forum's issue with paragraphs? It seems to hate them.

oh, you were expressing it... sorry, did'nt get it 1st time around.

Remember what you said about expression other time around in another thread when I tried to defend, or sorry, express, other member's points. As you said, first look a little closer to home.... <----thanks for these encouraging words, really inspiring

Quite right I said that there, and I said it again here. Not my fault if you mis-interpreted what I said.

While we're on the subject of back-tracking, wasn't it you who said "yeah, i really hope he's fine, he keeps us going." in the 'Maure: did he make it' thread. Nothing has changed about him since then. He's still banging on about 07 and conspiracy theories now.

So my dearest, that's what he's doing. Keeping you going.

Closer to home, I really like that phrase. :)

Aye aye cap'n. Now that's what I'll bloody well get on board with. And this is why if Bruce is ever away, it should be you, and the Puma. Sorry Tanita!!

Of course you have the right to free speech, but if you come into my house and spout something I don't like, I also have the right to kick you in the bollocks throw you out :whistling:

Seriously, though, as I think Mike said earlier, we are here in the 'establishment' of Wes and any other admins of this site and have to treat it accordingly. I can't really remember too many people getting banned or too many threads getting closed in my time here and any that have, have usually been quite extreme. However, I don't think I have been around as long as you

Yes.

 No, I'm sure you have a life. But I love getting you angry. I know, i'm a very very bad naughty girl, and i need to be punished :naughty:

Personally, I don't think the forum was that much different when it was moderated to how it is now, in the sense that it was never 'overly' moderated. Well, that's how I remember it, anyway.

Those spam posts used to get stopped a lot quicker, though, so make sure you have stocked upon your viagra

George expresses so well my views on the issue, I think I will appoint him as my ghost writer.

I agree with both him and Mike. And Bruce's style of moderation (since I've been around, at least, I know that Cav will disagree due to issues before my days) was perfect: unobstrusive yet he kept us honest.

Other than that, I vote for banning all of you and replace you all with finger puppets.

I think I'd be instantly corrupted by the power  I'd probably start deleting people's posts without telling them just to mess with their heads (although not Andres', because nobody wants to mess with that head).

Not without my consent you won't! Besides, I'm already writing on behalf of Tanita half the time :P

Unobtrusive is the perfect word for the style I was thinking of when I was inadvertently thinking like you, though.

I don't know why my name keeps popping up, I have no issues with Bruce's moderation, I have no interest in moderating this or any forum, I have no opinions on the matter of what can be done to fix things, and while I am flattered to see that maure's interest in me extends to almost every post, I cannot reciprocate the love, he rather overrates his importance in my life, I have no interest in getting him banned or unbanned or knighted or whatever, what's wrong with this forum has less to do with bad moderation, more to do with the limitations of the medium, it's a convenient pulpit where anyone can talk to a captive audience, derail any discussion and still survive as long as they adhere to basic rules regarding swearing etc - you don't need to get in trouble with moderators to completely destroy a forum, all it takes is a certain kind of mania and fawning indulgence and encouragement like this (not personal steph, just the closest example I could find, you aren't the only one, and sorry I haven't replied yet):

If any of you actually took the time to get to know the guy, you'd not find a more genuine caring guy.

Don't care what you say. He knows I disagree with his opinions at times as I do with others here. Get over it. Simples.

i.e. he has his own little fan club, and everyone else simply gets sick of it and leaves, what provoked me to actually say something recently was people who would never stand up to him doing so.

I don't have a solution, and I don't think I care enough to want to think of one.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when I joined here (end of 2006) and at some other time when the moderation subject was being discussed I recall you being particularly mad at the moderation style at that moment. I even recall you telling me that I wasn't fully aware of the facts and thus I could not give an opinion.

Oh...and now I recall you starting some threads appointing YOURSEL as a mod! :P But then again, those were the old days when I barely knew you people so I don't know if you were just being ironical or what.

In any case, if you say that you agree, then all the other things we said are either misunderstandings or in the past and of nil relevance anyways.

 I knitted them myself - it seemed fair after all the times you had me in stitches!

On the whole I'm just making a point of principle. Like you say, no doubt we can have a moderated forum that doesn't become boring or dull - mainly because the mods we have here intervene very little. That said, like you also said, it's partly a question of balance. I'd actually be in favour of mods if all they did was get rid of obvious Juicy Couture-style spam but, on the other hand, take Maure's posts: some will see them as spamming and others won't. And in all the years I've been posting here, we've hardly ever had anyone hurling racist/sexist abuse - that's not really an issue fwiw iirc atm imho btw.

Your analogy is a good one and made me think but analogies are always tricky because no two situations are exactly alike. Sometimes pubs do allow things that might not be allowed here. If you go to a private BNP rally held at a pub, you'll most likely find a lot of bigots! Or if you go during a football match, you might find language that would be censored here. Or if it's a comedy night and they invite Chris Rock for some jokes about race, we might find equally offensive material. Or they might be playing loud rap music that's full of sexist language that nobody there minds.

And I guess more fundamentally, it's a different way of interacting with people because you go to a pub mainly to talk to your friends, whereas on a forum you expect everyone to reply. So a closer analogy might be saying that a forum is like one table in a corner of a pub - it's a group of people who naturally get on and who choose to talk to each other. If a stranger hurls abuse at you in a pub, naturally the landlord will stop it because it's bad for business and because you bought a drink from him on the understanding that you and your friends would be left alone to talk amongst yourselves. An internet forum is a little different imho because when you join one and post on it, you're joining the one big conversation that is the whole forum. Complaining about the tone of a forum one joins could be compared to asking a table of raucous football fans if you can join them and then, after sitting down, asking the landlord to stop them talking the way they were before even though no one can hear it beyond their table.

Anyway, like I say, I'm only being argumentative for the sake of it! Bruce is a good guy and he does a better job than all other forums' mods do. :P

Personally, I don't think the forum was that much different when it was moderated to how it is now, in the sense that it was never 'overly' moderated. Well, that's how I remember it, anyway.

Ah but that's because you're of the '06 generation. A veritable spring chicken! :P

Well I'm only kidding about all this who-logged-in-first stuff. But it's a funny thing to think about - only Bruce has been around longer, and he's a mod so he's obviously biased, which proves me right. QED! :P

No I never appointed myself as a mod unless my memory greatly deceives me, find me a link, I am curious to know what you're talking about. Yes I had some run ins with mods years ago. I was young, I can't get that worked up over stuff on a silly little forum any more, and I never see myself getting worked up enough to ever have a run in, and I don't see myself caring if I get banned. I just checked my rap sheet, my last run in was three and a half years ago.
