Webber Will Have His Chance To Shine

Recommended Posts

From Planet F1:

If ever there is a driver who proves statistics cannot tell the whole truth, that person is Webber.

Webber's best result came in his first grand prix, when he took an emotional fifth place for Minardi on his debut in Australia 2002.

After a tough year with perennial strugglers Minardi, a move to Jaguar promised big things but delivered little.

However, he has done more than anyone to keep Jaguar alive and their ultimate demise does not reflect on his efforts.

Miraculous qualifying laps such as his third in Brazil 2003 and second in Malaysia 2004 hinted at his raw speed.

Next year he finally gets the machinery his talent has deserved for so long after Williams came calling.

He will at last be given a competitive car, even if the 2005 Williams is not a return to the Grove-based team's glory days of the 1990s.

Before next season is out Webber, 28, can expect to score more than the 26 points he has managed over the last three years. Few would begrudge him a maiden podium finish on home ground in Australia in March.

But trivial matters such as a handful more points, maiden podiums etcetera are trivial compared to Webber's potential.

He is a race driver in the mould of fellow Aussie Alan Jones, a similarly robust character who flourished at Williams and won the 1980 World title.

Michael Schumacher has yet to come head-to-head with Webber in anything close to resembling a competitive situation.

When that finally happens, the great seven-time World Champion may finally find a rival with more determination, guts and bloody-mindedness than himself.

Webber's best is yet to come and with Williams preparing for another transitional season, 2004 is unlikely to be the Australian's zenith.

But Formula One fans can expect to be uttering the name Mark Webber a good few times more than in recent seasons as one of the sport's good guys finally gets the break he deserves.

True he will get his big break at last, we have to wait and see how he does.
