15 minutes and still nothing, not a single timed lap...Alonso's Ferrari engine died just as he was leaving the pits. D'oh!

Sergio Perez already displaying "the McLaren Haircut"

If McLaren had placed as much attention in the championship as they paid on their drivers' hairdos, they would've won more championships than Ferrari by now.

Apparently, Hungry Heidi got a nosejob. Hideous Heidi would have been a more appropiate name.

It hurts to know that the ugly car and the ugly driver with his ugly finger will probably win this championship as well.

Big boys letting the other cucumbers clean the track up at the moment, not feeling the need to go out. So much for "we need all the data we can get" and "we don't understand the car"!

Nice onboard laps with Bottas, the future world champion who I'll be hyping throughout the season.

Valtteri Bottas is an American's worst nightmare. In "Valtteri," the emphasis is really placed on the twin tees. It's a hard sound to make. I'm a big proponent of Spanish, because the emphasis stays on the vowels, and is either predictable or marked. The first syllable in Räikkönen is a bit, tough, too, with all the gusto on the "R." Sharlapeak at Caterham, however, is just fun to say.

(An utterly useless contribution from me. F1 is truly back).

Really excited that it's all beginning! :)

Yes yes, Vettel back on top, where he belongs!!! Nothing else matters, except him or Kimi topping the timesheets...lovely lovely. Remember Button was fastest in FP1 last year and went on to win the race!!!

Lovely stuff!!!!!!

"1m32.8s on the next lap for Vettel and for the moment he is the quickest driver on the circuit. But bear in mind he was one of the last onto his high fuel run.

"07:02 Sebastian Vettel tops second practice at Albert Park with a time of 1m25.908s - 0.264s clear of Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber.

07:03 Rosberg ends up in third spot, but more than four-tenths of a second back, with Raikkonen fourth for Lotus and team-mate Grosjean fifth.

07:04 Alonso is sixth in the leading Ferrari and Hamilton ends his day on foot, walking back to the paddock after an incident towards the end"

RBR was sandbagging!!

Film at 11.

They did'nt sandbag, their programme dictated them running with high fuel loads to accurately assess one lap performance during the first day of FP1 Melbournewhistling.gif Incidently, it also dictated that they should run even faster come qualifying by another second or so...snigger.gif

Well, of course, he must have taken a second or something with him...

McLaren have struggled at other times when Hamilton was still helpfully there

Not so fast! BR might have the best car - not the best driver - but then again I believe Ferrari is has not shown all their cards the second time around, nor may be Mercedes.

Well, a Mclaren with a Hamilton in would probably be further up the timesheets, given he's better than Button in a bad car. That's one sense in which you could say "Mclaren are struggling because they don't have Hamilton". But that approach isn't particularly useful since it wouldn't change the actual issue, which is that Mclaren have produced a poor car and Mclaren still wouldn't be anywhere near the front with Hamilton in it.

The other argument to use would be that Mclaren were much more likely to produce a bad car after the demotivating event of losing their fastest driver. Of course there may well be some truth to the fact that drivers can have a strong motivating affect on a team, but it's completely unquantifiable (we don't know how much difference a driver makes to team spirits), untestable (we'll never know whether Macca would have produced a good car if Hamilton stayed), and what's more motivation itself does not necessarily equal performance gains anyway (see: Alonso/Ferrari).

So all in all, it's true that Mclaren are weaker for losing Hamilton, and it's true that we don't know if they'd be any stronger if he'd stayed. Think on that one.
