I have made a few posts on different hypotheses that attempt to contribute to our understanding of earth's climate. Although some are a bit "out there", they are not more so (truly less so) than the official orthodoxy. What makes them interesting is that they show, first, the complexity of the universe and, second, the magnificent response from humanity to this complexity through science.

Here is another proposition, cosmic rays. It amuses, doesn't it, but it is not a joke.

The study arises from cross-disciplinary combination of data from an astrophysicist and a geologist. The article is a layman's review of the study and its only faults are simplicity of exposition (welcome, though) and a somewhat confrontational attitude to the "science is settled" mob.

Ten Year Anniversary of the Climate Change Paradigm Shift

Shaviv had mapped the travels of the solar system through the spiral arms of our galaxy. Veizer had mapped the ice ages of the last 500 billion years. What they found is that ice ages occurred when the Earth traveled through the spiral arms of our galaxy, periods when the Earth must have been experiencing high levels of cosmic ray inflow.

Although I am retired, friends know I still have an interest in ethical behavior in academia. So they send me stuff and, inevitably, some of it is related to climate science.

The IPCC released its latest report a few days ago. It is bad news for everyone. Either humanity is facing utter doom or humanity is victim to one of the most absurd con-jobs in history.

For entertainment purposes only, here is an article from the skeptic front lines:

IPCC in denial. “Just-so” excuses use ocean heat to hide their failure.

http://joannenova.co...JoNova (JoNova)

Now that the plateau in temperatures has lasted for 15 years, everyone, even IPCC lead authors, can see the “90% certain” models were 98% wrong. So the IPCC now claims the heat went into the deep abyss, which they didn’t predict, can’t measure accurately, and, even by the best estimates we have, has not been anywhere near large enough to explain the missing energy.

...

EDIT: Not all there.

And here is an article from a self-styled lukewarmer:

Global lukewarming need not be catastrophic

http://www.rationalo...tastrophic.aspx

In the climate debate, which side are you on? Do you think climate change is the most urgent crisis facing mankind requiring almost unlimited spending? Or that it’s all a hoax, dreamt up to justify socialism, and nothing is happening anyway?

Because those are the only two options, apparently. I know this from bitter experience. Every time I argue for a lukewarm “third way” — that climate change is real but slow, partly man-made but also susceptible to natural factors, and might be dangerous but more likely will not be — I am attacked from both sides. I get e-mails saying the greenhouse theory is bunk and an ice age is on the way; and others from guardians of the flame calling me a “denier”.

And hello to you too, stranger.

In its latest report, the IPCC has been forced to unequivocally disavow itself from some dozen of the most brutal claims it has maintained over the years. The cost of these "errors" is already into the hundreds of billions of dollars. Not a buck will be returned, of course and, no, no politician will be held accountable.

This fundamental reversal also means that the climate world has become less entertaining. The fanatics continue to yell but, without the blind commitment of the IPCC, a lot of the mainstream is cautiously waking away, protecting its body parts (and wallets) from the backslash.

As a result, the censorship that allowed climate to become "settled science" is gone and the actual scientists are finally starting to be able to talk openly, to disagree, and consequently make progress without fear of harassment.

It seems then that, at least for the time being, we are going to be allowed to have an opinion on this one topic. If recent history provides any clue whatsoever to the future, though, it is inevitable that a new "issue" will be found and we will again be subject to all manners of abuse.

Until then, follow your bliss.

Take it seriously. GW is a threat for Spain. Can you imagine what'd we do if they had a hot summer in UK and Germany? eusa_think.gif
