Quiet One

Mel Gibson Kangaroo Holden Gp Of Australia And Whereabouts

I don't understand why all the fuss with the engine sound. They sound glorious on my TV with the volume up, like WW2 fighter planes.

Hamiltoon had somre problem (I missed the beginning) and he seemed very p**sed.

Correction, it's not as menacing, but certainly sounds rumbling and powerful. Add on top of that the sound of the turbos and the sound of heavy braking (more than previous years) and you have a new, different, complex and polyphonic sound.

This isn't heavy metal, this is prog rock.

I'm sold.

¡Hola amigo! :)

I'm p**sed like Hamilton. I've just discovered the cars have an 8th gear. The sound is like a cat rrrrrr... I'm lost like a pig in a palace. Wait...

The only good thing is Alonso on top of the timesheets ATM. :drinks:

The cars look so difficult to drive... And that's from my armchair in front of the TV. It's probably worse than it looks.

There's been very few mechanical problems, not as many as expected I mean. That might be promising for a kind of "normal" race on Sunday.

Hola Don Ale!

Quite an evemtful session, for a first practice. Lots of "moments" but nothing serious like you said, no crashes, no cars blowing or suddenly tearing the space time continuum and travelling back to Pearl Harbor.

Shame about the Lotus, though, I still wanna see those cars delivering. RBR has a half full/half empty glass: still some issues, still not the fastest, but not the slowest and with a very much improved reliability, Ricciardo certainly looked right up there.

Alonso was first, yeah, but as his time was still as fast as last years' Marussias, I think they still have plenty of room for improving.

Loved the Williams new livery. Errr...that's it.

Ricciardo ahead of Vettel, yes, told ya he was quick early days though.

Good summary, Andrés.

I think RBR and Lotus could have a great car hidden under all those reliability-overheating-teething problems. It's something we might see very soon, maybe not in Australia but the season is long and things can change fast. Ferrari looked a solid car, it means very little at this stage but maybe they are as fast as they can be with the new regulations. Maybe a 2014 Ferrari is a 2013 Marussia. :'(

Mercedes, McLaren, Williams... looked good as expected. That's been an extremely average Free Practice 1 in Australia. Or maybe I'm unable to read lots of things into number of laps by team, top speed, drivers' work in the car, engineers and mechanics' faces... ¿:-?

If you're in Aus, you would have seen the speed car challenge. With last years RBR, a Holden RBR V8 Supercar and a C63 Merc I think it was. How nice was it to hear the screaming banshee down the straits.

There are 2 factors in car sound from today's FP. The onboard camera sound and the external shot. So far the McLaren has the best onboard sound and I must say JB looks to be on it.

Biggest suprise of the day... the RBR's. They look good, and seeing it in action that look one of the best looking cars.

Ferrari's look solid, and I was impressed with Alonso's time. Sadly Kimi doesn't look to be happy with his car. Could be the electronic braking, but at this point we don't know.

I had a good LOL seeing Lotus. They are getting what they deserve.

Wasn't that impressed with the Mercs to be honest even with Hamilton stopping.

The thing that hit me the most about this new F1 sound... it that is sounds so much like MotoGP. I don't watch it, but have a few times stayed on that channel for a bit. That low rumble, it sounds very much like an onboard shot of a bike.

I did not expect the cars to sound this weak though. They do sound bad. Lawnmower bad, or on the Ten/ONE coverage, sewing machines.

Cars sound weedy, RBR surprised and so did Williams, Magnussen didn't tramp JB, in fact the latter's fastest FP2 time [5th - 9/10ths off Hambo] was set on mediums - everyone else on soft. Caterham a complete shambles, Lotus nowhere, rain tomorrow.

From the official F1 site, quotes from team members:

Ferrari

Kimi Raikkonen, P1 - 1:32.977, 9th; P2 - 1:30.898, 7th

“That was a pretty demanding day, because although we managed to complete our programme, it wasn’t trouble-free. In the first session we lost a bit of time, but that didn’t prevent us acquiring enough data to evaluate the overall handling of the car and the Pirelli compounds. This evening there will be a lot of work to do, especially to understand what didn’t work and to try and improve for qualifying and the race”.

Now we know how will Ferrari solve Kimi's lack of PR skills. Pat Fry is a ventriloquist.

Oh, don't be so bad with Kimi. Maybe they simply have exactly the same opinion about the free practice sessions. tongue.png

After watching FP2 I noticed two things.

1) I understand the FIA wanting to reduce Aero dependency but then not giving the teams anything to work with the increase mechanical grip was a dumb move. I can already see the cars never passing one another because they can never get close enough to each other. So the DRS zone is going to be even more of a factor and we will see even less overtaking outside of it. The car's need wider tires and a wider track.

2) There are some rookies who really should not be on the track.

Yep I've said that for years, wider chassis is the solution to all problems.

BTW, this years' best pit radio performace award goes to RoGro, those yells were something else.

Both divers complained of too much tire degradation...Nothing is set in stone yet.

It could be a common problem for all of them. The inboard camera was quite entertaining, in some cases it looked dramatic. I think Alonso or Kimi was one of the drivers working harder in the handling of the car.

Mercedes AMG are faster than any Mercedes powered team but hopefully we see a different picture in the race.

True, that was close to pornographic. cardR.gif

No way!

It's been years since I last laughed so hard watching F1.

"Nothing's solved!!!" Man, it kills me everytime.

I didn't pick what he said but the Spanish commentators thought he was swearing on the radio. I think that was polite after all. Not even a yellow card.

Q1 gone and it was a nailbiter.

Impressively enough, RoGro had a nightmare qualy, and he was in the pit discussing with the crew, his body language transmitting a huge disappointment and frustration, yet he was still smiling!!

I think I found my new hero.

OMG Vettel!!! Please daddy Newey give me a RB10 like Ricciardo's. Wait... Kimi crashed when the work was done, no? Crazy Q2 and I love it.
