SwingOnTheSpiral 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2014 What do you think? I thought they might look stupid but they look great. Good initiative. http://www.gpupdate.net/en/f1-news/313345/pirelli-showcases-18-inch-tyre-concept/

Jem of the Shire 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2014 At first glance, I'm not offended by them - but it'd be good to see before & after to compare properly. Another initiative to make F1 relevant to road cars. Yawn. Why can't the world accept f1 is not relevant to road cars, it's a form of motorsport. If we're all about being relevant to road cars, why not just race around in road cars.
radical-one 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2014 I personally like the looks. Making wheels bigger can save some amount of Rubber so I'm sure Pirreli will push this.
brambilla 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2014 I dont understand the groundswell of "Its Awesome!!" behind the 18-inchers, I think they look good on LMP1 cars, on the F1 Cars, they look godawful. Maybe the lack of a wheel well or fenders perhaps, but F1 cars look better with a bit of sidewall going on for me.

Amen to that, they claim they'll be faster but how when teams where putting hub caps on them to create more of a slimline effect so these wod create more drag wouldn't they? rodders47 2 Report post Posted July 10, 2014 Another initiative to make F1 relevant to road cars. Yawn. Why can't the world accept f1 is not relevant to road cars, it's a form of motorsport. I can remember that Motor Sport was the developer of " Radial Ply Tyres " Way back when and "Disc Brakes" along with "Locked Diffs" , "Aerodynamics" etc. etc. so in that respect I would say that current F1 is doing an injustise to the community if they DO NOT proceed with high tech development, and as the ROAD car has ben using big wheels/small section tyres for years hell I would have though it would be mandatory for F1 to use the same and for us normal car drivers to benefit from whatever devolopments that come from their use. Emmcee 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2014 True rodders but at the end of the day, people seem to be loosing focus on what this sport is actually about. Isn't it the pinnacle of Motorsport? Or upperclass billy carts with soon to be 18 inch wheels. I can't stand it when people say it's for the road cars, it's motor racing and last time I checked its supposed to be different from driving home from work:
rodders47 2 Report post Posted July 10, 2014 ok well then make F1 totally different !!!!! NO Spending Cap, let the teams that CAN afford it pay for it, Cut out 90% of these bloody rules, leave aerodynamics wide open for experimenting, leave the engine size etc open. In other words, have rules that are for SAFETY and let the teams design their own ideas....maybe just have a box that the car must fit in... THEN that will become BORING as ONE team will surely come up with something so bloody radical and costly that no one else could afford it.......

In other words, have rules that are for SAFETY and let the teams design their own ideas....maybe just have a box that the car must fit in... THEN that will become BORING as ONE team will surely come up with something so bloody radical and costly that no one else could afford it....... You mean how the 80s and 90s were? How does this cap work? Think about it, Bernie said he is ready for 8 teams with 3 cars, now we all know that the smaller teams struggle to make two cars run, let alone 3. So Bernie couldn't really care about the small teams, even though he always used to say small teams make f1. Every driver is against the standing restarts next year, but yet it's already locked in, so once again Bernie doesn't care about the teams or drivers. So with less people watching than before due to the sound of these cars, Bernie obviously doesn't care about the viewers. So whats happening then? Why the constant "cost cutting"? Where's this money going then? Can't be put back into the sport like Bernie consistantly sayes because there is still more cut backs, how is that possible if Bernie is investing the money he is saving back into the sport? Simple, he isn't, he is pocketing the whole lot and now has figured out a situation where he has the sport under control and gain massive profits solely for himself. So that's why I Beleive this sport will never return to its roots of simple flatout bare all racing and it's terribly sad. Iam all for change don't get me wrong but it has to be done with the best intrest of the sport, teams, drivers and fans and done traditionally to the sport itself and purely of the love of racing. I know iam dreaming but it looked that way in the early days.

The constraints of the current rules have caused Newey to pack it in, which is tragic. If one team innovates with a radical idea that works, good for them! It worked for williams in '92 with their active suspension. Other teams always catch up

rodders47 2 Report post Posted July 10, 2014 BUT I think we would only have 3 maybe 4 teams at the most !!! Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari maybe, Mercedes NOPE, Lotus NOPE, Sauber NOPE, none of the now also rans, so do you really want to watch maybe 3 or 4 cars from each team run around doing what will be PARADE laps, because no ONE team will get such a big advantage if the budget is non existent. Not for me

Jem of the Shire 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2014 I dunno, I think back to the 90's (I'm not old enough to hark back any further), cost cutting wasnt such a huge issue back then and there was plenty of competitiveness between the 'big 4' teams, with Jordan/Sauber/Prost also getting in the mix on occasion. Manufacturers may leave because they can't relate it to their road car division but I don't really care, it opens the door for new entrants who are racers, like Eddie Jordan, Peter Sauber, Ken Tyrrell, Colin Chapman, Alain Prost, Jackie Stewart in the past

Emmcee 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2014 The racing is awesome but the sound is horrible still can't understand why they can't sound similar to the turbo indycars.
KoolMonkey 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2014 Love the look of the 18 inchers. I mean seriously 13 inch tyres are too small. It's not that I think the current wheels on F1 cars are ugly, it's just a change I happen to like if they went to 18 inch wheels. Will they? Who knows, but I hope they do. Then get to work fixing the freaking hideous noses we have now, then narrow the front wing please at least another 6 inches each side. Wide the rear wing, and rude all the winglets and endplates on the front wing and we might actually have a F1 car we can all agree on that would look better than what we have. Emmcee 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2014 think of how aggressive the BRAKES will be with 18" wheels, bloody massive size... Now where talking, I think you have persuaded me mate, bigger brakes means less stopping distance, means faster laps, means ballsy overtakes. Hmmmm I think your right you's to. They might actually be a godsend to the sport.

KoolMonkey 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2014 Sweet. We'll get to see leadfoots like Blewish blow out his brakes even quicker. 18" or anything bigger than the stupid 13" rims are a must I say. These are Ford Escorts, they are the top of the food chain racing cars. Anything that makes them look better I'm all for it.
