To Save F1, What Needs To Be Done ?

We all know that there's no short cut to save Formula 1 from it's current turmoil but in your opinion, what are the steps to be be done in order to save it from total failure ?

Liberty: a new man at the helm (link above)

His findings were:

  • The revenue system is skewed in favour of the already rich and powerful, to the extent that the smallest teams are struggling to survive and money is tight for about half the grid.
  • There is a lack of competition on track.
  • Television audience figures are dropping in many markets - although this is largely because of a switch to pay television, to make more money from TV rights deals.
  • The longest-standing races are struggling to fund themselves and risk dropping off the calendar
  • The decision-making process is not working properly.
  • Some significant business and sporting decisions have been made for solely financial reasons, disregarding other important factors, such as their effects on the sporting side.
  • An acceptance that F1 has lost some of its appeal, particularly a sense of edge and drama and as an extreme driver challenge.

Liberty has decided to change much of that. The question is how?

That's on the table.

What I find amusing is an avalanche of accolades how good job BE has done with the F1, yet if one reads Liberty three-months long investigation on status of the sport, it's actually very damming of Englishman's (mis)management on the sport. Take just one sentence - he calls himself as a promoter of the sport, yet he hasn't done any promoting. In some cases there was an event planned for the weekend, yet good majority of locals had no idea that was going on, and so on...

Just money, money, money grabbing. People should forget about Ferrari's bonus, since we know what they bring to the table, and rather focus on CVC's take, and what they bring to the table.  Typical diversionary tactics.

Brawn said during an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live.  “I watch Formula 1, I have done for the last few years as a spectator and there’s times when even I haven’t been sure what’s going on in a race.

Key principle - simplicity. Glad to have you, Ross!

Something should be done about penalties imposed on the team, and consequently on the driver due to lack of reliability, such as need for engine change, etc. Double jeopardy is insane way to live. The driver is penalized in a race when his engine blows up, and then again next race because he needs a new unit. Why not impose some points deduction from standing WCC score, if they must, but as it is, I think it is totally crazy.

Stewards of the race are being now on loose, and if they want, they can lunch a witch hunt at will, answering basically to no one in practical terms. Well, good luck with that.

My feelings are in shambles. I should be happy, as a fan, that all ills and perceived wrongdoings I've felt over the years suddenly are up and in headlines as a new man coming up with his assessment on state of the sport, yet I do not feel that way at all. It is tiring. Media, mostly British, must have a substantial amount of eggs in their smug faces. No one can replace this (old) man, kiss kiss, they stated, yet what we are seeing is with every new hour gap is increasing between former policies and ideas, and to where future will lead us. I am not endorsing new ownership, and I am eyeing rather suspiciously their steps, but choice of Ross Brown and his voice seems pretty good step into right direction. Love it.

Understand your feelings. I would just look at it as - nothing stays the same forever and hope that the new management will do a good job by making the sport even more exciting and fair.

i still

cant comprehend how no one raises eye brows over one of the highest levels of sport and the athletes or sport stars don't get a say in how it develops. I don't think we have seen anything on scale with other sports that shows the regime that was in place under bernies ruling. He saw a chance to line his pockets thicker towards the end of the 90s and he took that opportunity with both hands and built an empire ruled by an attitude and state of mind that only  applies to one person, himself. Iam so excited he's gone that  I hope the door hits him on the way out.

Drivers attempted to add voice regarding new specs, but they were shut down and sidelined. It's a double edge sword. It can help, and it can bite too. (Watch Japanese drama series Doctor X).

Would you be too surprised if in 2020 there will be break away series in some kind of spiritual follow up of the F1, and guess hard an identity of a man behind it. Like him or not, the thing is, you cannot come out from high intensity environment, park it, and lay whole day on your back, while thinking about food and nothing else.

Hello  - 6 days later - someone is pi***d over critique received.

Notable: timing; a year before new CA has to be signed. If Liberty gets really arrogant and bossy, their little cart might loose a wheel or two.

I wonder for how long Ross will stay with this crowd. He is an odd one in that group, and should watch his back.

Ecclestone issued a statement in which he has cooled down speculations about his future, namely, no competing series to F1 in plans by him (yet).

As far as I recon, it's the other way around, F1 teams in the past threaten to have a breakaway series from Bernie. I mean, who would follow his breakaway series when most teams wants him out in F1 for a long time? Come on, who wants to follow a greedy old fart who is washed out?

I think key term was a competing series which allegedly he was contemplating to launch, as opposed to breakaway series. Teams are not in rebellious mood, at least not yet.

We do not need Friday's track time?

I am surprised to hear that. What is proposed then is that Saturday morning teams devote to car setup, qualify afternoon, and we go then racing on Sunday? Really? Is it going to be real racing, or just track testing masquerading as racing? Hard to tell sometimes. I've have been suspicious of it for a few years, and not so surprised to hear Alonso confirming (several months ago) exactly that McLaren utilized some races for development of their cars. Face of the gate ticket was most likely slightly misleading in naming the event as a race by 22 cars.

Surprisingly, for an acknowledged aero specialist, Adrian Newey has already volunteered that wind tunnels could be banned entirely. That would save teams an enormous amount of money

I do not understand this lust for dictatorship on part of some people. Why banning an investment into a system costing of several hundreds mill. EUR? If you don't need it as you say, than simply put, don't use it, save, and don't worry what others do, because they could use it. Dirty attempts to manipulate rules is endless.

Speaking of the domination enjoyed by the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Teamover the last three seasons, which many pinpoint as a reason for the declining interest in F1, Todt pointed out that this sort of thing has been happening in the sport for many decades.

The Frenchman (JT of FiA) suggested that it is up to the other F1 teams to work on improving their performance, if they are to combat the German squad’s stronghold at the top, and that knee jerk radical changes should not be necessary.

Sorry JT, but I this that's one of those half-truth statements of our times. While it is true that team dominance rotated, however please remind me when in the past we had a token system rattling in a gearbox, or homologation of new technology right at the start, and one restriction shooting after another. World has changed, it is not the same, and it is not better. Merit based wins on unrestricted competitive playing field has its value undiminished, at least for this fan. Locking up development advantage in favor of a one team is new era born in 2014 - first time.
