2017 Pre-season testing

Recommended Posts

All is back to normal in Orange land. 7 min into testing, and stationary monster is blocking exit from pits. Nice going. One wonders what Yasuhisa Arai thinks right now.

That's generally accepted explanation why Ferrari slid backwards last year. After promising start a few organizational changes and broken development were credited with disaster that followed, ending with P3 instead P1.

James Allen says:

So Ferrari has done something bit more interesting for its 2017 design. It looks like a very different concept at the leading edge of the floor – with low front wishbones and high sidepod inlet leaving the team with a heavy undercut area at the front of the sidepod to play against what is happening just underneath the floor at this point.

The bargeboards sit just ahead of this area so it looks like they are banking on being able to develop this section a lot in the future now there is a room for a larger aerodynamic device to play with.

McHonda is on back-foot with the oil tank, says report.

Magnussen must be bleeding from his eyes, driving second day, altho distance covered wasn't that impressive. I wonder how Seb feels today.

Yeah, and there is not reason to copy Mercedes, as Massa (playfully) suggested. That would throw whole aero balance out of window.

10:34 It’s worry to see Honda say that there are concerns about its oil tank based on what happened yesterday. To discover an oil tank shape is potentially incorrect suggests something is seriously wrong as normally it only shows up as a pickup problem in fast corners. To discover it on an installation lap at lower speeds suggests it’s a fundamental problem. The oil tank is vital to the engine and something most teams have a very good understanding of and very good test rigs to simulate all the forces and flows. So for McLaren and Honda to come to the first test session with a potential problem is a concern. It seems they are still missing out on the basics.

Lesson Learned here - anyone who had suggested in the past that we do not need anymore any testing on track as cost down measure, simply put does not understands complexities of physical world. Problem with the oil tank demonstratively was not discovered on dyno, and any test rig simulating track angulation and resulting car movements in precise manner would be pretty expensive undertaking. Pounding track with 10000 km before season, starting in Sep in preceding year - much better IMO.

Kimi must be testing a different setup to Seb. Hamilton is close to his lap time of yesterday, but Kimi on med tires is slower than Seb (at the moment) for some reasons.

As someone mentioned, I too like RBR's approach to aero testing. Establish baseline with basic flow, free of fancy stuff, and then, measure variances in performance through incrementally adding various (complicated) enhancements. Do not start complicated, otherwise with too many variables you might never understand what works and what is messing your day. Smart approach, IMO, and they all (probably) know that, but why everyone is not adopting this approach is mystery. Both, Mercedes and Ferrari seem to lead complicated life.

Maybe just testing stuff, like with the rake this morn. Also, Kimi is very specific with setup

Kimi is no closing on Seb. Good stuff, because both drivers aren't too far apart on timing (for now).

Just becoz Mclaren had another off-day (what's new)... does'nt mean you have to drag us down to the low depths of depression. :PThank you very much for your valuable contribution

Whitmarsh has to go!

Why is Ferrari staying on mediums? Comparative study with yesterday's setup? At some point they have to go on soft rubber as well. Maybe that's the plan for T2.
