keep it up Ve, keep it up

13:52 This is another ultra-consistent run from Vettel on the medium tyres. His last six laps have been within a couple of tenths. He loves those big white walls.

Morning session.

Vettel has done more than a race run (66 laps). Still on M tire.

Massa - well done.

What the hell is going on with Honda, why did they decide to go radical with the engine after making progress last year?????

Engine change for McLaren

Posted at14:12

Over in the McLaren-Honda pit, it’s looking very much like Groundhog Day. Stoffel Vandoorne has done 34 laps this morning but the Belgian had not been out for a while before the lunch break. Now we know why. Honda is changing the engine after a problem was discovered this morning. That’s at least six engines the Japanese company has got through in testing so far - and that’s just the number you get to when you count up the changes they will admit to; it might even be one more than that. It is really not looking good for that team this season.

14:12 There are three stand-out numbers in that lap count:

Vettel's 81, which include a great stint on mediums at the end that featured 14 flying laps with supreme consistency.

Vandoorne's 34, which we now know is a result of another Honda engine change in his McLaren – and the morning had started reasonably encouragingly, too.

Palmer's 15, a paltry tally that the Briton did not add to once "sensor issues" caused his car to stop and get pushed down the pitlane.

I do not subscribe into "it's only" testing. Point is, hard facts are in, and because he could do it, that's great. I think RBR tried, and no go (at least for now).  Before someone will jump on me, sure, tomorrow is another day and chance for new surprises. Not sure what is Ferrari aiming at, staying on M-tires all the time. I am aware of comparative analysis, removing tire from pool of variables, but still, at some point they have to have a go with S-tires.

Honda needs time, and they aren't getting it.

Ric went on a few short runs on ultra soft and could barely improve on his also short Supersoft runs. What does it say of the Pirelli specs...hmmmm

Ben Harvey Sporle: Imagine the scenes when @McLarenF1rock up in Melbourne and take a dominant 1-2 after the ultimate sandbagging job. Too optimistic?

So far, we have 4, maybe 5 teams in the fight. (Ferrari, Mercedes, maybe Williams, FI, and RB). Others - ?????

It will come down to 3 teams later on, methinks.

782 km (Vettel, Massa) - approx. 2.5 full race distance. (Have probably pretty red eyes).

Congrats to both guys. Well done job.

Massa set fastest lap of all AM, Vettel then led field in PM as the fastest car

I am not sure what was Mercedes testing today. Some unnamed drivers look like slackers to me.

Hamilton promoted Ferrari as "favorite". Hmm, what's all that about?
