2017 Pre-season testing

RB went after Vettel almost immediately on the same tire, which could give us comparison. Remains in P3.

NOT QUITE AS QUICK AS THE RECORD

Vettel's lap is not yet the fastest time this winter, which remains the 1:19.310 that Valtteri Bottas put down yesterday on the super soft tyre.

VETTEL GOES FASTEST

Vettel goes fastest on the soft tyres, with a lap time of 1:19.341.

Update posted on 11:35:22

Oh yes...on softs he did. I guess they can beat that all-time record of Massa in the 1:18s on the super-softs. Car is a monster!

12:12 By the power of subtraction, we deduce Vettel's Ferrari on super-softs would have been comfortably in the 1m18s.

12:12 OK. Vettel's backed off and gone again, posting a 1m19.4s. He was 0.7s quicker in the final sector that time. So...

12:10 Just to clarify for the Twitterati – that was a 1m19.314s. A 1m13s would not be sandbagging at all.

12:09 So that's an audible bit of sandbagging from Ferrari on super-soft tyres.

McLaren might have done more laps just simply sit on the flatbed, and driving with them around.

Ja. Mclaren caused another red flag. So much for Alonso's clever excuse of starting the grand plan of the mclaren project after he got fired frim the red team

If RBR is hiding something, they are then doing a magnificent job of it. To appreciate their sandbagging, if that's what it is, one has to realize that there is only 12 hrs of testing left in this pre-season.

Alonso was quoted that the only team he fears this year is RBR. I got that; standing on the starting grid next to VER and finish first lap without contact is no small matter.

At it again are we? Refusing to accept the fact he left on his own accord and wasn't fired. Must know something that brundle, kravitz and the entire f1 fraternity doesn't know. Claim he was fired because it doesn't make Vettel the "plan b" option look so bad. Every team in the grid would want alonso over any other driver and why is that? Because the whole f1 community and his peers say he's the best, but hey what would they know, they only compete against him.

I totally agree that Alonso left on his own accord through the door on one way ticket which Ferrari invitingly opened for him and without anyone dragging him by his collar. His wisdom, once outside of the door, that McLaren was his best option pays now handsomely off. A lot of money for very little work - good stuff.

That means they/rbr are not learning enough of their car so far and there's only few days left to set and find it's potentials. To me until you try you don't know for sure.

Exactly right. One wonders if Ferrari's enquiry about tricks of the trade and subsequent FiA checks put dampers on not so legal cars, and what we see is consequential outcome.

This is very different pre-season that of 2014. Here Vettel is having car with not much downtime, and he seems to love it how it feels. 100+ laps with 2 hrs to go. Good stuff.

Seb still labels Mercedes as benchmark (suggesting heavy sandbagging by Merc).

Looks like Mercedes, RBR and Ferrari will play together. Not everyone had a good day. Obviously McLaren, and to lesser extend Renault might be in trouble season long. Rest of them will go up and down like yoyo. Williams started well, but today it was not too good. Haas is not bad.

That's it for Sebastian.

Summary for Vettel: in Barc. 9 race distances, 2756 [km]. The guy is fit.

Now - Melbourne.

A lot of people though think Redbull will turn up in Melbourne with a totally different car. The car looks bland and from a design standpoint, newey usually has these out of the world ideas and finds the best loopholes that end creating clarification on rules often ruling in his favour due to the intelligence and common sense the man has. So I've starting to hold some positivity over that.

For my taste there is far too many assumptions about RB, and a lot of trust that a design engineer pulls a rabbit out of his hat which will smash rest of them in two weeks time. If so, I am not sure why then they bothered to show up at Barcelona. Such strategy is lost on me. There is one day left for them to show something in testing, yet people are talking about having new generations of engines in Melbourne, different aero, .... It's a puzzle.

With others it is what it is to a large extend. Not too many secrets are left. At least for the first race, while in-season development is parallel war that is raging on, and which, as we know, Ferrari didn't win last year.

Ferrari, Mercedes, could be RB in group 1, with Williams and FI lurking on their heals

Rest of them are struggling.

Haas is enigma, but they will score some points.

McLaren - well, they are 150:1 for the championship. (LH is 1:1 by the same bookies).

That's my impression of what I have observed in last 7 days and that's how season gets started.

Pecking order - I don't have one, but it will change probably through the season, depends on development rate.

Paddock interviews - Ferrari is "twitchy" at the front in comparison to stable Mercedes. Hmmm...
