Would be nice to know fuel loads. On the other hand, if AM can shake off 10 [kg] before March 20, then I think Vettel is probably in better position than last year.

Some analysis Sakae... Looks good..

"The lean green machine

A few readers have chimed in asking about the state of play at Aston Martin.

Here's Gary Anderson's trackside impressions from yesterday: "The Aston Martin looked quite impressive, with plenty of laps logged today. The car is consistent, the driver can put It in the same place lap after lap and both drivers, particularly Sebastian Vettel, seemed to have a good feel for what they had under them."

Otherwise, it's much the same as fellow Merc customer Williams. Plenty of laps done for both drivers with few obvious issues to report.

Also, much like with the Williams, I (deputy editor Val Khorounzhiy) absolutely love how this one looks on track. I have a few gripes - like Red Bull's crazy sidepods and Mercedes' sheet metal floor aside - but this is genuinely such a gorgeous crop of cars we're blessed with this year."

Excellent.

Now we need to translate words into some good results on March 20th.

I am more of a realist than pessimist, therefore I do continue to think that AM might not make it into top 5 for a while. Second test might be more telling.

First group is just now stronger: 2 RBR, 2 MB, 2 Ferrari, 2 McLaren... In fact, you cannot count Gasly out.

Latifi is an odd one, but Gasly, LeClerc, and Alonso will move forward when needed. Alpine is little bit question mark, but I think they are ahead of AM.

Looking good looking good

Vettel has also improved; he's third on a 1m20.865s, set on the C3 compound.

What held him in the garage. Count laps and compare it to RBR.

I honestly don't think so. They have some problems... Engine down on power, struggles with DRS, they just caused a red flag with smokey engine...

I think we are 4th best, might fight for 3rd

Good signs after some worry. Definately looking better after first few days

The car has some speed, in the hands of Vettel looks great

My prediction thus far:

1. RBR

2. Ferrari (might drop to 3rd depending how soon Merc sorts out their issues, they have a few)

3. Merc

4. Mclaren/AMR/Alfa Tauri?/

Not too bad. I had enough of every time I wanted to see track position, I've started from the bottom, like P18 and so on.

Looks very tight at the top... but... RBR clearly fastest (as I always state... thus far)

12:33 Verstappen puts in a 1m19.756s on the C3s to move within two-tenths of Russell (C4s)

  1. Russell, Mercedes, 1m19.608s, C4 - 56 laps
  2. Verstappen, Red Bull, 1m19.765, C3 - 46
  3. Leclerc, Ferrari, 1m20.308s, C3 - 31
  4. Vettel, Aston Martin, 1m20.685s, C3 - 34
  5. Latifi, Williams, 1m20.699s, C4 - 5
  6. Norris, McLaren, 1m20.827s, C3 - 38

New Aston vanes

Some new front wheel vanes clocked on the Aston Martin - this is from yesterday.

A similar set-up for Red Bull caught the attention of our Gary Anderson.

Speed runs now...

13:27 Russell goes quickest overall with a 1m19.233s in the Mercedes on the C5s.

13:25 Vettel instantly goes quicker, running on the C4s, to put in a 1m19.905s to move up to third.

No further running for Alpine

Scott Mitchell: Alpine's day is over. Alonso's problem earlier was with the hydraulics. Alpine says a "minor sealing issue" led to a fire in the back of the car. The necessary repairs mean it will not be running again today.

This is why those idi**s need more and earlier testing time. Their schedule is lousy, insulting joke. Just like in 2014. New technology, less testing, stupid tokens, etc. This happens when accountants, lawyers and PR men deciding about engineering subjects they know nothing about.

Now Vettel with engine issue... darn

13:56

Trackside update

"Vettel appears to have suffered an engine issue there. There was a puff of smoke from the rear and he was fighting hard to keep the car pointing in a straight line into Turn 10 as the back axle tried to lock on him. He kept it together before pulling up and aiding the marshals with extinguishing the fire."
